NGD: 1979 Ibanez Artist 2622 is here!

Finally got this baby in my hands today. It's a 1979 Ibanez Artist with some interesting mods (mainly the single coil route). The neck pickup has no markings, just a gold back (believe it's the original but unsure) and the bridge pickup is a vintage Seymour Duncan custom. They both sound fantastic, as does the middle pickup which I'm guessing is a Dimarzio. The little switch that I thought should be a coil-tap is actually wired to be a killswitch - cool!

Overall I really have to say the hype about these vintage Japanese Ibanez Artists is all true. I absolutely love this guitar and it's going to be a mainstay in my stable for years to come. Not bad for under $400! Here are the pics, some post-setup and some during.

Damn nice find man. It sounds like your enjoying the mods. Ibanez sure knew what they were doing back then.

That guitar is too amazing. They really put Gibson and Fender to shame in that whole decade.

Thanks! I'm really wondering if this is the original neck pickup with the cover off or something. It sounds amazing.

Wow, if it sounds that good, and there's no way to tell what it is, keep it on there.

There's no doubt that both alnico and ceramic Ibanez humbuckers of the time were amazing, but many swapped out pickups and put DiMarzios in which have since then left a dent in the Ibanez world.

If the pole pieces are slugs and there are magnets down below, it's probably an Ibanez pickup. If it's alnico then it's anybody's guess as to what it is. I don't know if Mighty Mite was around then doing pickups, but DiMarzio usually has either a direct PAF copy or they additionally use hex screws in the poles of one or both coils. If you photograph the top, sides, and back of pickup and submit photos to gearpage or similar, somebody may ID them.

love it, the bridge pickup screams and the neck and mid pup clean tones are outrageous. Stays in tune like a champ too. I'd have no complaints at the usual selling price, and at $379 I have even fewer. Wonderful guitar. Having a lot of fun with this killswitch too!
