What's my RG

Hi Jemsite. Nice to meet you!

Another "what guitar is this" post... I've spent a bunch of time trawling catalogues and the forums here but I'm stumped so its time to ask for help :)

I picked up this RG from ebay, unknown model "maybe a 250".

Bridge is a lo-TRS.

serial on the neck is F99xxxxxx
stamp on the neck base is "rg 480ah"
stamp on the body under the neck says "arg450dx"

Neck 24, rosewood and spots

pickups read neck ah1-g(-p) and bridge ah2-g(-p)

The only models I could find in the catalogues and price lists from around '99 with lo-TRS bridges are all 470's but this has the scratchplate so it can't be one of those.

It looks exactly like the RG250LTD shown here from the RG japanese production 2001 cat (can't link yet) but that has a 505 bridge and different pickups. In fact I can't find any reference to RG models with AH pickups :S

Any ideas? Have I just got a frankenstein's ibz made from random bits?

Thanks :)

Ah, dammit... just realised I put this in the wrong category... way to first post! ;)

Re: What's my RG

Neck stamps are notoriously inaccurate for much information beyond the series range (eg., 5xx, 3xx). A lot of RG570 necks, for example, will be stamped RG550 and I once even had an RG550 with a neck stamped RG750.

An F99xxxxx stamp on the back of the headstock indicates that the neck was manufactured in 1999 at the Fuji-Gen plant in Japan. So you've likely got an original Wizard neck that was slapped on a lower-end body. The pickups for a late 90s RG450 would have been AH models like the ones you've got.

So yeah, I'd guess it's a bit of a frankenstein, but the neck is likely way better than what originally came on it.

Re: What's my RG

500 series used 500 series necks--same with 400 series...usually.
always go with the body stamp.

So its a 450-ish, possibly with a few bonus bit. Sweet.

Thanks!

When Ibanez started with the 4xx series, they hadn't quite ramped up production outside of Japan. It is NOT unusual to find early 4xx's with Wizard necks, Edge trems & the V series pickups. They were 5xx guitars without the barrel output jack. But since most Ibanez enthusiasts poo-poo the 4xx line, they can be had cheap.

This is very true^^

I'm quite sure the OP's guitar is a legit Fuji made RG450. Either '99 or '00.

Wre the 4XX line Fujigen guitars bad for any reason? Why do people poo poo on them?

Maybe I can find one second hand over here. Would be nice to have that era of MIJ in my collection :)

Hi everybody,

I know that this thread is pretty old, but I am trying also to identify my RG, and it seems, that I have exactly the same guitar as the TO.

- It was sold to me as "RG450"
- It has a F99***** stamp on the headstock
- It has AH pickups
- It has a Lo-TRS trem

I measured the neck with the following results (in mm):
width at 1st fret: 43,8
width at last fret: 57,2
thickness at 1st fret: 18,0
thickness at 12th fret: 21,0
The neck feels very thin snd ist rather flat with "shoulders" - so i would call it a flat D-profile. Could this be the original wizard-neck, since the mesurements don't fit exactly?

It is back with a mirror-pickguard an has a rosewood fretboard with dot-inlays. According to the board-rules I am unfortunately not (yet) allowed to post pics or links.
I love this guitar, it sounds and plays amazingly. Even the trem, that seems to be disliked form most players, works just perfectly for me.

My problem is, that I can't find a guitar with those specs and looks in any catalogue. The guitar that comes closest to mine is the RG450AH, but it has a different trem and different pickups. Can somebody give me more indormations about my guitar?

Thank you!
Keiler

Does nobody have an idea?
I realised, that this thread is in the wrong category. Could it be moved, please?

Hi Agent540,
thanks for your reply!
I found that one, too. It has the wrong trem, the wrong hardware colour and the wrong pickups. Still pretty close, but not a hit...

Re: What's my RG

Just pointing out the Ibanez catalogs are not 100% reference and don't include small runs, dealer/distributor exclusive runs, etc. Remove the neck and you will see the ID stamps.

In a way it doesn't really matter. It's not a collector piece sometimes the less you know the better in this case.
