Advice on building an RG style 6 string

Hi guys.

I am just seeking general advice on building my own RG style Guitar. I've looked around, and there are pre-made bodykits available for RG's. I wanted to assemble it, and then apply my own custom (and fairly complex) paint job. Does anyone know any useful tips or have any experience with a project like this.

Also, I was going to try find an actual floyd rose for it too, not just a licensed copy.

Thanks

Welcome to jemsite :)

There's a wealth of information on here for this stuff. Do some forum searches, read up on people's projects. People have used the cheap chinese kits and had ok results, if that was what you were going for. There are decent businesses who make nice aftermarket parts, and of course eBay and the like for genuine Ibanez parts. Work out your budget, what timbers you like, if you want real deal Ibanez or are happy with aftermarket made parts and go from there. Read everything you can from this site. ;)

OFRs can be bought for a good price from warmoth.com too. ;)

Thanks for that. Warmoth.com had some great online design tools for custom bodies and necks.
Although I still can't find any articles anywhere on how to do detailed paint jobs. I am looking at a kind of tiger print scheme on the body.

Imagine the guitars in the picture were RG's, thats exactly what I'm aiming to make. Not sure how I could attain that much detail.

Thanks

I'm currently building a js guitar at the mo, i've had a donnie paint job done on it which my cousin did for me, shes an artist by trade and she loved doing it, it was a very different project for her, do you have an artist in the family thats always a good place to start for the paint job as it can work out quite cheap

Unfortunately not. I have done CGI stuff before, but I've never (succesfully) done any physical painting or spraying. I have an old Odessa strat which I've stripped down, and was going to sand that down, apply primer, and give it a go.
If only I was related to an artist, haha.
Do you have any tips for building from a kit? I'd prefer to build from scratch, but I don't have any of the tools I'd need.

Re: Advice on building an RG style 6 string

My advise is take your time with it, i started mine in january and still havent finished, although i have taken my time over choosing the hardware (couldnt decide on colour) although i will be putting stings on tonight to check the neck i got for it is ok, this will be the first time i will be able to play it so i'm a little excited, if it all works i will be able to send it to my mate who will do the clear coat and then ill do the electrics.

I didnt buy a kit job, i have purchased the bits seperatly as i have progressed, if you are looking for a body check out perle guitars (nate) they are based in the U S of A, but delivered to me in old blighty so may do oz as well.

As far as painting goes i painted the base coat, i think it took about 10 coats with a fine sanding inbetween each coat, first time ive ever done and it turned out awesome, smooth as a babys bottom.

Check out my thread in the js section and you'll get to see the progress of my project.

Good luck with yours, its very rewarding doing it yourself, and you get to choose exactly what you want, just dont cut corners if you have to wait a little for the more expensive parts just wait for them dont settle for cheaper components cus you'll regret it:smile:

If you are not a skilled painter and are trying a tiger motif,, I would 1st try it on a canvas or something to make sure you can pull it off. You may want to go with fabric if you want to save the headache. If you can find tiger fabric, you can apply it right on the top of the guitar and seal it in.

Practicing on canvas is definitely a good idea. I do want to go for the option that will look the best, irrespective of the hours it will take and all the pain it will cause. I could try the fabric method on the Bass I was otherwise going to give away, and see how that works.
Maybe in a few weeks I'll launch a thread on the progress of it. I'm defintley going to buy a body from perle too, they are exactly what I've been looking for. Thanks guys :D

Agreed. I have the good fortune to live very near Nate. I've visited his shop on several occasions and commissioned some "custom" work from him. He's a straight up guy that LOVES what he does........... he's in it for the guitars, not the money. His shop is a shrine to all things Ibanez too........... so he knows these guitar intimately.

The only suggestions I could make is to take you time, save twice as much $$ as you think the build should cost and order a neck and body at the same time from the same builder, whoever you choose. Nothing is more defeating than parts the won't work together after shelling out big bucks, and lets face it--all bucks are big bucks these days.

Thats great advise, I brought my neck about 2 months after the body, didnt read the fine print(always read the fine print on evil bay), Didnt quite fit right so i had to do some modifications to the heel of the neck which was a little scary as my woodwork skills are pretty poor, turned out awesome in the end but i was lucky;).

Glad you are going to perle for your body you wont be dissapointed with it.

Good luck with the build

LOL:grin:
Actually, I don't think he throws anything out. There must be 500 bodies in that shop............. even the mistakes are useful for something.
