Value of 2010 S5470?

2010 S5470 Prestige MIJ in Translucent Black Sunburst (TKS), with the titanium reinforced neck, ZR2 bridge, Hot Grinder 1 & 2 and Short Tracer 2 pickups, original Prestige HSC. Some honest wear on the body under the control plate.

What would you say is fair, honest market value? Considering trading an unremarkable '96 all original Custom Shop Strat in a mostly even trade, a guitar I simply do not play.

If you like the trade, go for it & don't worry about value as long as you're getting what you like to play. I can't speak for everywhere, but around here it's a buyer's market for guitars & amps, so I only consider whether I like playing them.

Sounds good on paper, but I have a masterbuilt custom shop Strat worth at least $1600 on the low side and I want to be sure this guitar is in the ballpark.

FWIW, I'm not actively seeking to sell or trade the Strat otherwise.

The S5470 goes for about the same on paper. I personally prefer a double locking trem vs a synchronized. If you dig the strat keep it & save up for the other, always keeping your eyes open for what you're looking for.

I saw one here on the classifieds that sold for $760 in 2017 and another at just over $1000 in 2016. FeeBay has little or no historical data except for inflated asking prices on a few.

I was hoping to dig up a little personal experience to help narrow down a current fair market value of this 2010 model that's in very good, but not excellent, condition.

You might wanna look at RGS in the 500 & above series from about 87 to 99. They're Fujigen build & the edge trems are super.

I just picked up a 1998 Fujigen S540 last week with the Lo-Pro Edge. Was looking around for a second similar guitar for a gig I just got, so this isn't a must-have by any stretch. That said, this one is also a Fujigen built, whatever that means these days, and it's local.

I've never owned an Ibanez before, so I know nothing about the different eras and associated build quality.

Here's a quick rundown of Ibanez desirability. 87 - 96 rg 500 series & above. These are the Fujigen builds with the Edge trems considered most desirable. After 96 the 500 series & above had a 1 added to the model # & became prestige, but there are are a few exceptions. Just look for the made in Japan moniker on the headstock & that'll be your best bet.

Thanks. That is the one thing I do know is to seek out the MIJ models. This S series is MIJ at Fujigen but apparently not with the same build quality as the pre-2000 models then?

At any rate, in my untrained opinion, it isn't an even trade by any means? Original street price was $1399 and there is no way it has retained all its value over 8 years, or has it?

snaggleyoda 04-16-2018 10:54 AM

I'll have to agree on that point. Resale value is so subjective. I personally think the Ibanez design is better. Better access to upper frets, better trem, & all around easier to play. I would say the fender mystique has a lot to do with it. Also Ibanez sold a lot of guitars in the 90s. Around here the used market is a big time buyer's market. I see high end strats & Les Pauls sit on Craigslist forever.

Re: Value of 2010 S5470?

Viewed objectively, the masterbuilt Custom Strat will certainly have a much larger pool of possible buyers and far higher value. Lets be honest here, to the vast majority of player the Strat is more desirable and better. Also, the ZR2 trem is not really loved by Ibanez fanatics and the S takes a back seat to Ibanez signature models and the RG series. So to sum it up never overpay for an S. They're underappreciated guitars especially with the edge/lopro or hardtail but not going to fetch top dollar now or later.
