My custom JEM - ..after years of dreaming..
Every once in a while, someone will post a "Name your dream JEM" etc and everyone will spout off a list 15 miles long of stuff that will never be found on a JEM. *Flamed Maple Top, different neck profiles, fretboard materials etc. *Well, I'm actually building my dream JEM. *I have a maple topped RG-550BK body that was converted to a JEM by Brian Calvert. *I have a Wizard neck and some DiMarzios (an EVO and a X2N). *Now I need help deciding the last thing: *The pickguard and hardware colors :)

The guitar body and headstock will be finished in a translucent color that Jackson calls SOLAR. *It's used on the PC1 model that Phil Collen of Def Leppard uses. * *It's the amber one in the lower left here:

The pickups are black.

I was thinking of these options
  • mirror pickguard/chrome hardware
  • smoked mirror pickguard/cosmo chrome hardware
  • pearloid pickguard/gold hardware

any comments on these, or new ideas?

I always thought it would be kinda cool if you took a mirror pickguard and took a lighter to it in spots.. So it had scorched spots. Kinda like a BSB without the SB.

I think that a solid black pickguard would look good. You know, Bad Horsie style. You could even get it custom engraved with your favorite design or something. And gold hardware. Or chrome. Kremlin's idea sounds good, too, with the burnt mirror. Sort of like it's tinted in some spots, maybe?

Good luck with the customizations!

I used to have a USA Custom Exotic Wood that exact color. *It had cosmo chrome hardware on it and it looked positively stunning. *Cosmo chrome all the way. *

Regarding pickguards, that is a tough one because it covers so much surface area. *What if you had someone try to match the flame in your top, and match the finish. *Laminate it with a contrasting color on the bottom and bevel it so it shows just enough to give some dimenion to it. *Might help to have someone mock it up with Corel Draw or something. *May look like hell for all I know, but it was just an idea.

Sounds cool!

I quite like the yellow pearloid pickguard here

it might set the amber finish off well (would have to find one that fits though obviously)
They do sell pickguard blanks in all colours aswell if you wanted to cut your own...I'd like to see what their "Simulated Snake Skin" one looks like and also their "Mint Green Pearloid"

P.S. Gold hardware of course.

I'd go for a solid black pickguard as well, coupled with black hardware and a black Cliplock Strap. I think keeping things plain and simple would be the best so as not do detract from the cool finish on the maple top :)

I don't think Ibanez sells black hardware anymore...I tried to order through a shop and they told me all that was available was chrome or cosmo or that nickel stuff. *But then again, I was looking for a lo pro edge 7. *Maybe they still offer it for six string trems.

No pickguard and direct mount the pickups would be very cool

it must have a pickguard. *IT USED TO A BE RG-550 *so it's already front routed..

Gotcha........thought it might be *a rear routed one. *Then my vote is for something amber colored similar to the Solar finish.
