J custom vs RG550

So guys, i had my mind set on an RG8420ze J custom for ages now. I was really into the emgs and the sweet purple mahogany body.
But After saving enough money the price of it has really hit me. (2300 AUS)

So i as thinking, maybe i should get an RG550 for about 500 - 1000 dollars less, as that would be my second choice (i love bright guitars)

Anyway, should i just stick to the J custom, or just get an RG550
I haven't had much experience with j customs so all help will be appreciated.

Hi
depends where you are in your guitar playing life.. I owned a DY Rg550 in 1990 when I was around 15. used it for 10 years before buying another guitar, and it did everything I needed. if you prefer to sepnd the rest of your money on other things, then you wont regret buying the 550. You can take that guitar and tour around the world with it and it will keep on comming back for more..

That J Custom you speak of, will be awesome also.. Between my 550 which I still own and my J Customs, the J Customs play better, but every once in a while I grab my 550 and still enjoy playing it..

Its all about the money, if you prefer not to spend so much, the 550 will do everything...

good luck !!

In my opinion the 550 was the best pound for pound guitar ever made by Ibanez you can't go wrong with one. You may or may not want to swap the pups out but if you do you'll have a real killer guitar.

J Customs have the better spec and build quality but all that comes at a price as you know.

It all depends on how much you're happy to spend on a new guitar. If you don't mind leaving yourself broke and having a pretty exclusive guitar that none of your mates are probably not gonna have then the JCRG is the one.

If you wan't a great mid range rock guitar and still have enough cash left over to go on holiday then buy the 550. You can't go wrong with either but there's a considerable difference in price between the two.

Yeahh, i just love how the RG550 looks the most. If the Rg8420ze was Bright red, i would get it. Im so into looks when it comes to guitars for some reason. ive gotta find a Rg550 in Australia first though, which is kinda hard

Get the J custom, much better guitar, build & quality. 550 are nice but seem pretty cheap compared to a J-custom. You get what you pay for.

Re: J custom vs RG550

i think the rg 550 is very very close to a jem or j custom.but the looks are a lot different.the j custom is a little more exclusive and a litle better.its a litle better guitar for a lot of money more.i own both.(2 jcustom, few 550's)and i think if money dont matter you have to buy the j custom,if not?go for the 550.with the right pu and set up its a superb guitar. i hope i helped you a little but you have read it before here above.

Edge.

I'm in the same situation, however, I already own both and have owned several other Prestige guitars. Personally, I find the J Custom too nice to play or practice with and prefer a workhorse like the RG550. Talking about differences in playability boils down to preference - super wizard vs. prestige wizard necks and edge vs. edge pro (or edge zero in the case of newer JCs). I don't think it gets better than a super wizard neck and Edge trem.

So the Edge 3, i have heard a lot of bad things about them?
And dont the newer RG550s have a slimmer neck the the Prestige neck.
Like 17mm - 20mm or something?
Whereas the pretige neck is 18 - 20mm
Thanks

Re: J custom vs RG550

I thought all RG550's were equipped with Edge trems not Edge III, but I'll leave that to an Ibanez expert to answer.

Super wizard necks on older RG550's and the RG20th are 17mm at 1st fret - 19mm at 12th fret, Prestige necks are 18mm at 1st fret and 20mm at 12th. May not seem like a lot but it's noticeable when you play.

Okay thats good. So i assume the neck on the 550 and J custom will be pretty similar?

+1

Old RG550 offers incredible price/performance value. You can get those 1988-1991 550 models for 400-600 bucks and i promise you wont be disappointed. I would consider stock pickup change - V1 and V2 are more or less ok but S1 has to go. I have it loaded with PafPro/HS-2/Super2 and lovin' it! Comparison with j-custom seems somehow unfair.

Re: J custom vs RG550

IMO there is a day and night difference in the tone, playability and quality/finish between the 2010 J-Customs and any other Ibanez RG I have ever played. I’ve just received two purple 2010 JC’s and I am absolutely blown away by them. To my fingers, ears and eyes these are perfect guitars.

Compared to the 550 and most other RG’s, the tone is much fuller. The sustain and tone of my JC’s for example is just incredible when compared to my Jem and all the other Ibanez’s I’ve owned. The neck and fret finish is also unlike anything I have seen or played. They sing with very little effort and input! They resonate and have a beautiful voice. You need a decent amp to fully appreciate how brilliant they are.

If you need a decent amp first, I would look at one of the following guitars +cash for the amp Ibanez RG1570 or RG3770Z (super wizard and decent pups standard) –especially if you prefer a brighter tone. Personally I love the tone of a mahogany bodied RG…

You could always get a JC later when your rig is set up. You’ll probably appreciate it even more then. Even a RG1570 prestige with decent pups can take you all the way. (I like the RG1570LMR: durable red finish that won’t show fingerprints.)

The voice my JC produce and the feeling I get from playing her is worth every cent imo…

All of the best!
