Re: Identifying the "key" of a song

sorry for the late reply, haven't been around for a couple of weeks. but to answer your questions:

yep, that's it exactly. 3 notes per string really illustrates the pattern principle well. ...

Re: Identifying the "key" of a song

italianpctech is explaining it well. it is helpful to try to think of each mode as its own scale when initially learning them so that you can understand what makes them unique. however, you should...

Re: Saw the Experience Hendrix Tour Sunday night

zakk gets a lot of flak (ha) on forums, but the guy is really a versatile guitar player. if you've ever heard him play acoustic, you'd see he has a lot of range and a keen sense of dynamics. i do...

Re: The beginning of Speed Metal?

it took me a long time to get into screaming/growling, but i have now learned to tolerate and, in some cases even appreciate it. i had a killswitch engage cd for years and couldn't understand why...

Re: My Incorrigible VL300

have you tried cranking it past 1 yet? some of these newer amps actually do sound decent at lower volumes, but in my experience every tube amp sounds way better when the power tubes are overdriving...

Re: The beginning of Speed Metal?

I remember hearing kill em all for the first time (first thrash I was ever introduced to). that first song 'hit the lights' was the perfect opening...this loud din of distorted guitars, bass and...

Re: Al DiMeola on legato

i see satriani being brought up a lot in these legato vs picking discussions as if he does nothing but legato or '90% legato'. if you really look at his playing, he's picking a lot...he just doesn't...

Re: The beginning of Speed Metal?

yeah i was pretty surprised to hear he wrote that riff too...definitely seems like a james riff, but i'm glad to see kirk made some significant contributions to the classic metallica sounds.

from...

Re: NAD: Triple XXX II (aka JSX) - Help for a Newbie?

hmm, sounds like the tone that you originally liked came from the original triple xxx. it's common for a manufacturer to come out with an upgraded version of an amp (5150 II being a good example)...

Re: JS1600 retrofitting tuners?

+1

I actually have 2 of these now, both set up with 10s and no tuning issues with the planet waves tuners or the retainer bar (which I also have on 2 js6s). I do have a great luthier though. ...

Re: Songwriting: The parallel minor/major.

when it comes to songwriting (especially rock music) there really are no rules. the parallel major/minor thing has been done so much in modern music that our ears are very used to it.

of course...

Re: Amp recommendation??

congrats on the 20w blackstar. i agree with you that it sounds different than the 5w...i preferred the quality of gain on it vs the 5w and of course you get more headroom for your cleans.

Re: Looking to buy a new head...

it's plenty loud for 5 watts. I have the ht5 head (original version) and used to use it in practice with one of my previous bands. it will keep up with an acoustic drum kit but it will need to be...

Re: What now?

there isn't a 'best' method to learn or get better per se. there are many ways to learn and it really depends on what method clicks best for you. when I was playing for a year, I was lucky enough...

Re: New Joe Satriani CD

lol, that is one of my fave satch albums. to me, that one was satch pushing the envelope and the limits of his creativity. but to each his own. it just demonstrates how versatile satch can be.
