Just had myself a nice little deal on my third MIJ Ibanez RG for £335 GB.

It's a 2002 model and, based on the Europe catalogue, I'm pretty sure is an RG550EX in the sparkly 'Galaxy Black' finish. It has one bubinga stripe down the back of the neck with no splits near either the locking nut screws, or the neck join. The strings were rusty and the frets, while very tarnished, had no discernible wear at all. I can't find any dings or scratches on the body, neck or headstock and have just cleaned it up, polished the frets and restrung it. It now looks like it's just arrived from the factory, not a 17 year old guitar.

Here she is...

well, someone can correct me, but I though that the 550 ex didn't have the dots but rather the shark tooth or whatever is called? Can anyone confirm that?

I've just put the serial number in and it's an '01, not an '02. I think the RG550 EX in galaxy back is in several early 2000s Ibanez Europe catalogues such as:

They're definitely dot markers on the EX but the trem is supposed to be a Lo Pro Edge according to catalogue specs and mine has an Original Edge. However, Ibanez Fandom just states "Edge":

OK have done some more digging....

This one on eBay currently is identical to mine except it has the correct Lo Pro Edge Trem whereas I have an Original Edge.

If you look at the store invoice in photo 12 of the listing, it states RG550EX in Galaxy Black (the seller wrongly states 'Cosmic Black'.)

So this Bubinga striped neck era in the very early 2000s was around the time that the Lo Pro Edge was introduced. Could this have been a case of mix and match tremolos being installed since the Edge and the Lo Pro Edge are interchangeable?

The guitar is that mint (also with an original store receipt and identical case to the eBay one above) I just can't see anybody having tinkered with it.....

Thoughts on the ID?
