Hey guys, I've been trying to figure out a way to have a switchable 500k/250k pot with more-or-less the same taper, and I think I finally got it.

One of the first solutions proposed by tech people to drop the resistance of a certain pot value is to wire a resistor across lugs 1 and 3. The problem is that it messes with the taper of the pot, and this is something I have actually tested before.

The (possible) solution: having two potentiometers with a similar taper in parallel with each other. We all know about dual gang pots, but this is the first time I came across a dual gang pot WITH a push-pull DPDT built in. This can allow you to switch the second pot trace in and out of the pickup wire path so you can go back and forth between 250k and 500k. Plus the price doesn't seem to be too bad either.

For the uninitiated, 250k pots have been traditionally used on Fender guitars with single coil pickups to drop the treble response, and gives a slightly warmer tone. 500k pots are traditionally associated with humbucker-equipped guitars, and pass more treble through the cable.

If you have ever tried this out yourself, or aren't sure if this would work well, please do leave a comment below with your thoughts. Thanks in advance.

I've used a few different value pots and can always hear the differences. That said, I've always gravitated to 250k pots for both vol and tone. I couldn't see myself having a reason to want two different values available, but can understand why someone else would.

My most recent adventures concerning tone controls center around having a tone switch instead of a pot. I haven't nailed it down yet, but I'm getting close........

I see, thanks for the comment. To be honest I find it pretty specialist myself, but it might please some corksniffers who insist on exact values and whatnot. I'm actually thinking about another similar config which not only toggles between pot resistances, but also tone capacitor values (.022uf and .047 uf). Of course this is all on paper.

All of this started because I dreamed about getting a 7-string strat in daphne blue one night. Now I'm thinking about getting a custom one built to my specs, and these ideas are for the mockups although I am still far away from making this project a reality.
