I was just curious if this was possible. I think it would be a fun variable to the forum, and would encourage even more helpful advice (even though we're all full of wonderful advice already)

For those of you who don't know it's just a reputation system. You can rep each other and give good rep for help, funny thing, things you find interesting, essentially anything another member did to deserve good rep. You can also neg (give negative rep) to unhelpful, ignorant, rude people.

Anyone else with me here or am I a loner on this one?

We've discussed it before in the past, as it comes up every so often. Bottom line, it doesn't really mean anything, and is very easily abused. And as you can imagine, anything that can be abused will eventually be abused, and that in itself speaks against it.

I've seen this feature on other boards, too.
The only problem with it, is that the "rep" is based off members just clicking that a post was helpful.
No real way to regulate it.
the Ibanez board uses one.

Just my opinion, but I think member's posts speak for themselves...and don't need a meter.

For example--I just joined, but know Rich id THE go-to guy for tons of info.
There are a bunch of other helpful members, too--and even the newest members can filter out what they need.

True story. I liked the feature on another board...until I got negged hard for doing nothing wrong recently. I since deleted all info on my profile etc. I see how it could be abused

Bryan--EXACTLY.
Some members do that just out of spite...unfortunately.
Someone might be the most helpful, but could get drawn down by noobs with multiple accounts or just a bunch of people trying to increase their own reps.

Rep systems are only useful on sites that are heavily trafficked where there are typically a number of contradictory replies to any question. It becomes useful to know which reply comes from the person with the best reputation because many of the replies are just plain wrong. We have low enough site traffic that the helpful people with good info generally reply to threads and if there is a difference of opinion, it is generally discussed clearly without too much "noise" to confuse the thread.

Car forums are a good example where rep can be important because many of the questions will deal with technical topics like how to perform repairs or effective mod strategies. Most of the content on his forum is pure opinion, like which guitar do you like the best. Only the repair/setup forum is highly technical.
