I am getting a latency of about half a second when playing over backing tracks. It comes and goes without a specific increment in time. Its incredibly annoying and throws your timing off. I have a gig of ram and winxp pro, and overall a decent soundcard(audigy zs2). Im thinkin the problem is due to it being a USB data transfer vs a firewire cable, not enough data being transfered quickly enough. Anyone have any input, thanks.

I´m not exactly an expert in USB recording, as I´ve just started off recording with a Mackie Spike USB interface, but from what I´ve read (and some general computer knowledge...) your problems might be due to one of the following:

A) USB connections take up relatively much processing power. With a slow CPU, you might experience high latency or even glitches - what kind of CPU do you have? 1GB of RAM does not help with a P2/300

B) The backing track as well as your guitar playing is monitored through the Audigy? Try installing some ASIO driver for your Audigy card. I think all audigy cards are shipped with it, but maybe this is an optional/manual install. If you already have ASIO drivers... well, forget B)

C) Maybe your motherboard has a VIA chipset? It´s notorious for its USB problems and can be picky about external devices attached. Installing the latest chipset drvers might help, but not necessarily...

Well, for now that´s all I could think of. Tell us about your configuration, then maybe some more things come to mind!

Greetings,
Carsten

(Who is experiencing no latency problems  )
