Best Spray Gun To Buy???????

go over to projectguitar.com jermey from LGM had written several huge and very insightfull posts all about different guys, paints, and about anything else you need to get started. He does a great job of giving the pro's and con's of everything.

Every pro I know of uses a gravity-feed gun.

You definitely want an HVLP (High Volume Low Pressure) gun, as opposed to the cheap standard guns on the market. It does a much better job of getting paint on the target instead of everywhere else. Make sure you have the right size nozzles, etc. to be able to spray the material you want. Good guns can get very expensive very fast, but a cheap gun that gives terrible results is a waste of time and money. Be sure to use a filter on the air line or oil and water in the line from your compressor will mess up your finish. Also make sure your compressor can produce enough volume (CFM). Spray guns use a lot of air, and you can't spray well with an undersized compressor.

No, you do not want HVLP. I own HVLP, RP, and high pressure. HVLP is the least used. All I can say is do a lot of reading first. There is alot more to painting guitars than buying a gun and spraying paint. To do quality requires expensive materials and safety equipment. Keep this in mind, only the rich can afford to buy cheap, you buy a cheap gun, you'll be buying another one soon. You buy good, you buy once.

Any rec. on brands of sprayers??

I'm in the tool business, and sell a lot of equipment to cabinet shops. Although I don't sell sprayers now....I did in the past. There's only one brand the good shops all use: Binks. Siphon-fed, not gravity fed. I would imagine that spraying a guitar is somewhat similar to spraying fine custom cabinetry.

The great shops wouldn't use binks though lol.

Binks is nice, Sharpe is nice, even Devilbiss has some nice guns. Cream of the crop is Sata though. Nothing else even compares, they are the ferrari of the paint gun world, next on the list to Sata I would put Iwata. Binks, meh, I'd leave them down in 4th or 5th spot personally.

Oh, by the way, gravity feed is nicer, but the bottom line is, it doesn't matter if it's gravity feed, or syphon feed, or pressure pot, and if it's the best gun in the world, you still need to know how to paint. The best guns in the world won't give a crappy painter a good finish.

I have fooled with cars for years and took woodshop in
high school. I have sprayed alot of things with a spray can and
have got great results.I know....it's not the same thing as using
a gun with good air pressure. I know it's in the prep work.My
neighbor painted quite a few cars a few years ago and I have
a good idea on what it's going to take.I did Vai's "Jaboom"
at a annual summer event last year, so I should be able to tackle
this
