Ok so theres a supposed 89 FP a guy has for sale and he cant find the serial number.Not on the neck or neck plate and he says there are no scratch marks on the neck plate like an attempt to scratch the number off.
So where do I tell him to look and are there any characterstics that distinguish this year from others.

yeah, the older jems have the number on the plate

that should rule out the 2003 re-release. That had headstock number i believe.

Is the trem original? FPs from '88 - '90 have Edge trems. The Lo Pro Edge is on '91 - '02. An '89 FP should have the pickups mounted on the pickguard. They were changed to direct body mounts in '96.

they put lo-pro on the florals? I had thought they were all done with the original edge for some reason. I think mine is the only guiitar I have left with the old trem system, I sold off my ancient rg that had one...
