Chop Shop Trend???

Can any one explain to me where this recent trend of buying guitars and breaking them down and selling off the parts has come from?
I know that the sellers can make more money then selling a whole guitar but It seems to me that most of the time they don't sell all the parts and are left with odd bodys etc???
IT just seems like a shame to do this when these are completly fine and usable guitars???

Opinions....

well, it wouldn't be feasible for these people to do it if there wasn't a market for it. and apparently there is a market for it.

to some extent, they are providing a much needed service. ever tried getting a replacement neck from ibanez? they are no fender when it comes to spare parts.

due to the (recent resurgence in the) popularity of the rg line, the prices for some of these parts do seem a little over the top, but that's supply & demand.
Actually, Ibanez does sell replacement necks, but it really depends on the distributor. Previously they required you to send them an old broken neck, but now you no longer need to. (at least according to the canadian distributor you could as necks ARE in thier parts catalog).
buddroyce - can you tell me which distributor will get you a neck from Ibanez? I live in the GTA also so I'm familiar with the stores.

There is only ONE distributor in Canada. Most Ibanez dealers who don't stock Ibanez parts may not be able to get you a neck. Find a dealer that stocks Ibanez parts and they can order one for you. (mind you, it'll take a loooooooooong time for it to arrive).
Can you confirm that 1000%? I have a hard time believing EFKAY isn't bound by the same rules as HUSA and the rest of the major distributors.
I just sent an e-mailed the product manager about getting a replacement neck. We'll see the reply. All I know is that a few months ago when I placed my order for Ibanez parts I was told that I could get anything in the parts price list (which including body's and necks).

Either way, I'll let you all know when I get the reply.
"Replacement" has it's own suggestions. Ask if you can flat out buy some necks ;)

News to me :).

Just got the confirmation. I *AM* able to order in Ibanez Necks. A neck for an RG1570 (part# 1nkrg1570) lists for $505 Canadian. (about $400 USD). So I guess this is news for some people.
Amazing! That is just going to burn HUSA's britches!

Do they have a price for one of the new type RG1527's,just out of interest?
I don't know how much the new 1527 neck is, but a neck for last years RG1527 is listed for $560 Canadian. (about $450 USD). The draw back is that I don't think any distributor carries them in stock. I was quoted that it would take 4-5 months for delivery for a neck.
You'll notice though that the price they quoted you for the neck is so ridiculously high that it's idiotic to just buy a neck for slightly less than the entire guitar.

Now if they let you buy a JEM neck- you're in business because people have been begging for those for years.
You're right, the prices on a *cough*replacement*cough* neck doesn't make much sense but mind you, I also guess it's also a deterrent to those trying to boot leg an Ibanez guitar.

(btw. You *CAN* buy a JEM neck. They list for something like $600-$950 Canadian[about $500-$800 USD]).

One must REALLY REALLY REALLY want a replacement neck for a TRULY beloved guitar to pay that high a price for a neck, and oh yeah, did I mention the 4-5 month wait??

I'm certain people would buy a JEM neck for that amount. People like me have dropped $2-$3k on custom JEMs.

You buy a Wizard or Wizard II on auction for $120 and then pay LGM $310 for a vine inlay. That's $430 for a one-off. I bet lots of people would pay the extra $100 for an official JEM neck with the exact profile etc.
