Hi,

How many valves should my pre 69 super tremelo 100w have? Has 4 tubes, has always sounded great and have just taken the back off for the first time and noticed a empty space on the RHS.

Cant upload pics as have exceeded my quota, can send direct if anyone wishes.

Cheers

Take it to a proper repair shop and have it looked over. Short-cuts on electrical stuff can ruin it permanently.

I would say it's missing a neuron..... (or two)

LOL sorry, just the first thing I thought after reading the title.

It should have 4 power tubes and 3 or 4 preamp tubes (the little ones), a normal Marshall of that era will have 3 preamp tubes, the tremolo may need a 4th.

Hope that helps,
Roger

Yeah, you can remove the inner or outer power tubes and cut the wattage (but i hear it also cuts the tone). Removing one could do damage to the amp.

I would take that thing to a repair shop and consider getting it retubed, biased and recapped if it needs it. It is old enough that it is worth getting some decent NOS tubes but they cost a fortune. The SED Winged C tubes are still every good tubes for new tubes, but still no Mullards...

Thanks for the help every one.

Okay here goes.......

It was serviced by an authorised dealer here in OZ, so Im pretty sure there has been no shortcuts.

rgr,
Thankx for the confirmation. It has 4 power tubes and 4 preamp tubes.

Preamp tubes are Mullards, is it possible the power tubes are phillips?

Cheers

the missing "thing" your refering to is really a filter cap. idk why its not there. the tremolo amps have 4 preamp tubes, one extra for driving the tremolo. instead of tube reverb its tube driven tremolo. idk if the tubes are phillips, but it looks like your amp is an aluminum panel one and not a plexi glass but i'd have to be able to see better, clearer pictures of the panel/chassis to better determine that. it does have a "laydown" mains transformer and that is supposedly more desired among collectors. if it has had a master volume mod done to it.. its already decreased in value. I have seen mint condition super tremolo's go on the bay for 3,000. i just sold mine for 1,300$ but i needed the money fast. as for the differences with yoru amp from mine, mine was almost dead original electronically save for a power cord change b/c the old one wasnt grounded. mine had 4 speaker outs as well. my trannies were 'standup" and i had the footswitch to boot.

God bless,

Tony

Thanks Tony.....I can send you more pics direct.. have exceeded my uploadquota. Whats the purpose of a filter cap? Do I need to have one?
Why the differences with out amps? Ie yours had 4 speaker outs, mine has two. Whats the trannies? Is mine laydown?

The reason I mentioned Phillips tubes, is b/c I could just read it. What are they like?

Sorry novice tech...getting better thanks to everyone here..

Cheers
