Eddie Van Halen death

I was going to start a thread an hour ago. I was shocked at the news. There have been rumblings about his health but none of them made it seem the end might be near.

He was one of the greatest of the modern innovators and he influenced a generation of players.

RIP EVH.

RIP Eddie. You changed everything.

It's a sad day, didn't think it would affect me so much but I feel pretty gutted. Eddie had more influence on me than any other player really, spent my youth listening to Van Halen.

Same here. Gutted is the word. I had 1984 on vinyl and it had such a major impact on me as a kid. I just remember being a kid staring at the album cover wondering what this baby angel was doing smoking, and wondering what all the letters meant. I don't think I ever called it the "1984" album until years later.

RIP to King Edward. A true icon and revolutionary.

If it wasn't for Eddie I would not be where I am today. I used to listen to popular music in High School in the mid 80's. When a friend gave me a cassette copy of their first Album. That moment changed the direction of my life, truly. We have lost another one of our Heroes.

So sorry to hear about it yesterday. Listened to some old classic VH last night... I consider him the "Hendrix" of my generation (80's teens). I wore out all the old VH albums/cassettes I had as a youngster, his lead guitar work blew my mind. As an adult I tried to learn a few VH songs through the years and I became awed by his rhythm playing... the guy could take ANYTHING and make it groove! Made eclectic VH songs flow and sound good... in an innovative and different "Eddie" way. There will never be another Eddie Van Halen, but I'm glad we have so much of his work recorded. Might be volumes of interesting work in his home studio recordings that we'll get to hear in the future!

Edit: I saw this interesting interview with him a while back... Interesting stories about how he grew up and got into music, etc. Pretty cool!

Nice to see all the stories. I was sitting in the delivery room... My wife just had our second child... And my dad and I were texting... And I was sending him pictures of the new little girl... Then he told me. My jaw dropped. Most definitely a shock to us both. It was a happy yet sad/somber day.

When I was a kid my dad taught me to play and Eddie was his most favorite player for sure. Which rubbed off on me of course. I was 12 when my dad gave me his 1987 kramer beretta. I begged him to paint it like eddie's and he did hahaha. I played that thing dead. It's sitting in my basement now, frets worn so bad it's not even playable. And the truss rod won't adjust. The floyd is is rough shape. Now I am definitely going to restore it. I'll have to pass it down to my boy once he's old enough to learn. Eddie's passing is a eery feeling. It's something no new generation will feel... Guitar heroes are essentially gone now.

Yeah, this is a bummer. He turned the guitar world upside down with his innovative playing. RIP, Eddie.

In 1980, 15 years old, I was geeking out about the greatness of Ace Frehley in a tram. A young man, sitting next to us, said: "You should check out a new band called Van Halen"....

Lol... What?

I was showing respect. The video is from an episode of South Park showing people setting aside their differences and strife in celebration of Van Halen. In real life, the celebration of EVH's life is one of the few things not creating strife which is why I found the video cathartic. One way or another, I was showing respect, or at least trying to.

I think he was talking about a post after your that had a spam link in it.
