I'm thinking of changing the Blaze out of my UV7PWH because it's too muddy.
Is the EMG 707 more trebly and higher output?

EMG 707 in Universe?

I think I've pretty much gone through the full catalog of Dimarzio 7 string pickups lately outfitting a few different 7's I've gotten ahold of. They're all pretty decent and the descriptions are really right on the money. I'm very satisfied with each one I've used and won't hesitate to buy more in the future.

EMG 707 in Universe?

Two Hands. You are correct about Dino. He was the one that got EMG to make a 7 string pickup. I am curious why they didn't make the EMG 707 the same size as any other 7 string pickup. I have though about dropping one into my Universe guitars, however, I was deterred by the fact that I would need to get a new pick guard, route my Universe body, and remove the pickguard everytime I would need to change the battery for the pickup. So needless to say, if I want to use a EMG 707 it will be in my Dino Custom

Man, I'm so jealous of you and your Dino custom!! And about the sizing issue...it was made custom as a trial thing. Maybe they didn't want to have to design a whole new casing for a one-off that may not even be a success and then Dino liked it as it was. Anyone opened one up to see whether the extra size is necessary? If nothing else, it makes them very distinctive looking. They're attention grabbing. People see them and think "Wow! What are those?" And then are lead straight over to EMG.

Man, you guys are on top of it! Yes, the EMG 707 is actually in the housing of the 5-string bass pickups they make. You can also get the EMG 35TW which is a splitable version, though it's a little less output. I use it in the neck with a 707 in the bridge. The split is accomplished with an included push-pull pot for the 35TW. Look at the EMG89 for the 6-string version... As for why the pickups were never made in a standard 7-string size, it's simply that there isn't enough of them happening that they were gonna re-tool to make them smaller. I work at the place where Rob Turner (EMG founder) started experimenting with his little blobs of epoxy, and simply put, there isn't enough demand to bother making a whole new housing. Dino's guitars were made by Ibanez with the correct hole, so no need to bother. And yes, it's a mix of an 81 and 85. Think of it as a 81 EQ curve, with the 85's output. 8)

You cant take an emg out of its housing. I had an 81 that went dead so I tried to open it up to see how it looked inside and I will say this, those pickups are damn near bullet proof. I had to use a bandsaw just to get through the thing. very well constructed.

The EMG pickups are filled with epoxy. It's there to keep all the parts inside. Along with the magnets and stuff, each pickup has it's own preamp inside. It's all encased in this goo, and yes, they are damn near impossible to get into without damage. As for the knobs question, there's no difference between the 6-string pots and 7-string pots. EMG's do use 25k potentiometers and stereo jacks due to the active (battery operated) nature of the systems. Passive systems (no battery) run from mono jacks and can have an assortment of pot ratings, most common being 500k and 250k potentiometers.

Since you need to route and cut to get the EMG's in, can someone tell me the pros and cons of replacing my Blaze II bridge pickup?

Should I get an Evolution 7 or a Blaze Custom? I think the Blaze II is a little muddy on my UV777. I am leaning toward the Evo 7. Any comments would be appricated. :D

Ask Shannon Sharp......He has an RG 7620 with 707's installed and should be able give a better idea of what the differences are.....
Well, I'm joining the conversation a little, but better late than never. Yes, I put EMG707s in an RG7620, but since then, I've put them in a UV777BK too.

The UV is my main axe & I LOOOOOOOVE the sound the EMGs produce. They have tons of clarity and output. I play very technical progressive metal & my sound cuts through thanks to the EMGs. If you want to put them in a UV, you WILL have to do some modifications since there's no way to mount them to your pickguard. I have them mounted to the body and then a custom pickguard was made (black/white/black) to go over them. Also, I removed the middle singlecoil & installed a 3-way pickup selector ala JPM style. Also to make battery changes faster, I routed in one of those quick change battery packs from Carvin into the back of my guitar. I'm telling you now, you CAN'T go wrong with EMGs!

Not to brag, well a little...
Since I got an EMG endorsement, I am a little biased. ;)

You are not bragging, you are speaking the truth. Before I got my UV777, my main guitar was a BC Rich Gunslinger with EMG's. They are by far the best sounding pickups I have ever used. Given the choice that is what I would go with. I just did not want to damage my guitar putting them in. I'm not so handy with tools you see... I find it hard to believe that the Evolution 7 or Blaze Custom would be better sounding.

Well, if you wanted to install them in your axe, there are plenty of people on this site (becalvert, littlegreenmen, eddie koselar) that could do the work for you for a very reasonable price. Becalvert @ universaljems.com did my RG7620 & I had my local tech do all the mods to my UV.

I find the EMG7's have a more defined sound...if that makes sense. The mods necessary really aren't that difficult. I would get a new pickguard for the PWH, so you can always revert back to the original setup ;-)

Would I just be replacing the bridge pickup? Eddie, I live in Los Angeles so let me know if you are interested in a side job. Or anyone else in the Southern California area. Any tips on a pickguard would be appriciated. Oh, and what is PWH?

Thanks guys!

I was refering to the original post (UV7PWH)....

Personally, I would replace the 2 hums and leave out the middle single if you were going with EMG's, but this is your guitar ;-)

Depending on the sound you are going for, Dimarzio makes several 7 string pups (EVO, Tone Zone, PAF) that are excellent. The EVO's are a little bright. As far as I know, they only make the BLAZE, no Blaze II's or customs....according to my calls to Dimarzio.
