The VLX91 switch on my ‘98 Jem 7VWH has gone bad; as I have to replace it I want to upgrade the pots (DiMarzio 500 K), the capacitors (Orange Drop) and maybe the neck pick-up.

As the neck pick-up in the Jem EVO 25th ann is a reversed bridge Evolution pick-up I’m considering throwing it in as I have an spare bridge Evo around at home. The problem is that I like the sound of the regular neck Evolution pick-up and I am not completely sure about the change, but sometimes I would like to have a higher/hotter out-put out of the neck position pick-up (used to the sound of a Gibson Alnico V Burstbucker Pro these days). I would like to hear about any opinions from those lucky owners of a 25th ann than can compare the sound of the neck pick-up to a regular 7V (pre-2003 if possible). Does it alters/ruins the in between position sound?

Thanks in advance!

If you're going to do an EVO thing and upgrade pots/switches, why not get the mad-hatter solderless setup that Steve has in EVO? Bonus of that is it's really low effort to swap the bridge pickup to the neck and try for yourself then. Not tried it myself, the Evo neck version already has quite enough output for me, I did replace the bridge pickup with a SD Full Shred in my 7V though.

I don't like the sound Steve gets out of that set on EVO (on the youtube vids I have seen) and I don't want to spend any money on the mod (I have the spare parts available at home). I will do the mod and as it reversible if I don't like it, I will put the neck evolution pick-up again on it.

OK - did you have a chance to do this and how did it work out?
