So the last time i was actively playing guitar was probably somewhere around 2010-2011. I basically stopped playing completely until now.

I used to use GP5 and something else? ( i cant remember the name but it was like GP5 but it was free). I also used to plunder the high school printer in the mid 2000's and print out tab from Ultimate-Guitar unbeknown to my teachers at the time...

What are people using these days? Ideally something free and low tech, having playback is my only real concern. Im currently using Microsoft text documents to save my tab ideas.

Preferably a desktop version as im not really the type to engage with my phone other than text and calls.

If you want playback, you could try Songsterr. It's good to get the rhythm but I find it not always accurate. I personally find tabs off of ultimate guitar for free

I've used Songsterr too, but have also noticed inaccuracies a couple of times. Tabs are hit and miss, but help... Youtube play throughs, covers, etc really speed up learning a song or solo and some have tab too.

Il check it out and see how it goes. Im not really one for doing 100% accurate playthroughs of covers etc so minor flaws dont phase me.

Im starting to get back into sound design and music production, i take alot of inspiration from Resident Evil, Silent Hill type games so i need something where i can save my ideas and ideally have it play back as an audio file. It means i can play it over other ambience ive made using synths or whatever and see if it suits.

Having something i can edit the notes on the fly without having to try re record what ive done would be hugely helpful.

Cool... I listen to several artists that make video game and flight simulator soundtracks or background music... like Meteor and Volkor X, etc... Great stuff to listen to while working and fun to jam along with or improvise over.

I listen to alot of music and i tried my hand at making some electronic tracks in FL studio but my attention span is terrible so i never got any real work done. When i started creating ambience with FM synths i was more engaged with it because the sounds can change drastically just with the turn of a control knob so it kept me interested and in the zone.

Im quite drawn to spooky or unsettling sounds for some reason so i gravitate towards horror game soundtracks and stuff like that. Ive never really tried adding guitar into the mix but after getting back into playing the guitar recently im finding alot of use cases for making ambient/horror stuff.
