How can you tell if ebony is damaged?

Hi all, I just purchased an old second hand J custom with an ebony fretboard and I noticed some lightish brown stains on the fingerboard. Under the brown stains there appears to be some wood grain as well. Could this be a sign that the ebony has dried out and cracked? Many thanks and take care.

yeah it could mean its dried out but theres polishes and such to help it out.
contrary to popular belief, ebony can have lighter sections.

check out stewmac.com - they sell a stain for ebony that evens out the appearance.
Almost every company now stains ebony their is almost no jet black ebony left thus it is almost always stained you have mostly likely simply worn through that. Fretboard wear is common on older guitar my 1938 gibson archtop has almost been scalloped out their is so much wear on the fretboard
Thanks for the advice guys, much appreciated.
