i just did it to an S series with a wizard neck. it had that gloss finish on it. i started with 150 grit sandpaper. do it lightly cause it doesn't take much to take off the finish. after all of it was off, i blew all of the dust off of it(with an air hose thing) then i went over it with 280 grit(finest my woods class had) and then blew the dust off after that. took a little moist paper towel and then cleaned it(or just use guitar polish) its smooth as a baby's bottom, so i think my method worked quite well. i'm sure its better with a higher grit for the final finish though.
