Joe Satriani Alternate Picking ?!?!

18192 Views 82 Replies 21 Participants Last post by  Drew
people say hes a shred head... but the only "shred" ive heard him play is probably legato, and the occasional arpeggio (mystical potato head groove thing). is there any songs/videos in which he alternate picks? (or as most teenage guitar playing wannabes would say, Shreds?)

thanks

I wouldn't say legato is easier than alternate, or the other way around. But Satch has a great legato technique. Or at least he was miles ahead 20 years ago in the instrumental rock genre.

For me, Satch is more about music than showcase, and if he plays too many notes for you to follow, then it's shred. If you can follow him and understands what he does - then you probably don't think of it as shred (shred being a bad thing in this context).
Ha ha, Satch playing out of key... Good one! :D

Maybe someone isn't familiar with pitch axis? Or Satch's music in general?
Nah, it's not sour. Just protecting Satch from silly attacks.
Is that in general or are you referring to anyone specifically??
Any and all from Europe.

That would include me.
Isn't 24 notes per second enough shred? Give me your definition of shred, and it will be easier to find examples - if there are any. ;)
Satch said early on that he liked the jazz approach, hence the song structures.

It's not original the 10th time. ;) Vai is a n00b!
