Joe Satriani Alternate Picking ?!?!

18192 Views 82 Replies 21 Participants Last post by  Drew
people say hes a shred head... but the only "shred" ive heard him play is probably legato, and the occasional arpeggio (mystical potato head groove thing). is there any songs/videos in which he alternate picks? (or as most teenage guitar playing wannabes would say, Shreds?)

thanks

Better is subjective, i dont think anyone can beat satch's phrasing.

His legato stuff on the Crystal planet album was all pretty hot, that was only like 1998 i think.

Listen to Time, last time i saw him live he still nailed all the legato, i wouldnt call it shoddy ;)
I agree with the "better" comment. Let's not get into the "who's better" arguments, though, because there are players out there who make Steve and Joe look like amateurs when it comes to legato. Allan Holdsworth and Brett Garsed, to name but two.
G3 came over here!! last month was it? in glasgow?
Ah turd, i thought it was september or something, i havent looked for a while :(
each player has their own distinct style, that seperates them from others. e.g. satch's random but melodic phrasing, vai's whammy techniques and say, Frank Gambales arpeggios.

so i dont really know why i said Vai is better than Satch.
Listen to Devils Slide from the Live in San Fran gig, during one of the solo sections he does an AWESOME descending top E open alt. picked lick which fits perfectly.

Satch says that he prefers the sound of Legato, which I also do most of the time, but there's times where only something stacatto sounds right.
for memory satch has a few great alternate picking runs on surfing with the alien, for memory echo and crushing day had a few :)

I'm going to digress a little from the thread. When i think of Brett (Rambo) Garsed, i always think of his hybrid picking and string skipping. He's amazing with those two techniques.
i know his technique and unique-chord building is good and everything, but what else is so good about Holsworth? His random improvising?

Yeah, Brett is just amazing all round, but somehow he is quite overlooked. Isn't that always the problem? So many people get hooked on the "big name" players and rarely dig deeper, but when they do they often see guitar players who outclass them in almost every area, then they wonder what the fuss was all about with the players who are getting the most attention.

Does it sound like I'm complaining?

Good!

I get tired of seeing the best (IMO) players being ignored.

Technical ability and compositional ability dont always go hand in hand, thats why ;)

I've seen players who technically could blow players like satch and vai out of the water, but couldnt write a decent song for toffee.

for example?
Doesn't Satch alternate pick a lot in "Killer Bee Bop?"

i dont know, i dont have the song.
i disagree with most of you.. I think satch's newest album is the most musical of any of his.. he has some select songs, but i find his phrasing is very limited and i cannot stand the whammy bar ****ing and ridiculous tremelo picking and legato shredding.. it seems like he can only do the extreme of shredding.. he will be doing bluesy stuff, and then he kicks it into shred mode and has no feel at all---just constant notes and ****ing, nothing in between. dont get me wrong, there is a lot i like about him, especially his newest album & dvd.. but the more i study his music, the more i find he isn't as good as people brag him up to be.

I can see what you mean when you say his newest stuff is more musical then the previous, can you give me some examples of where you feel he had kicked into shred mode?
I dunno im just going quickly through most of his super colossal but can't find many examples of what your talking about. If anything his fast legato runs give his music more feel compared to alternate picked ones (well in my opinion).
I find even his old stuff had a great feel to it (memories!), good stuff, i love his use of scales in that song, harmonic and melodic minor, even dissonance lol.

yeah i agree where you say he isnt as good as people brag him up to be.

and to Wallie, listen to flying in a blue dream, near the begining. he does some melodic vibrato-ed notes, then he just randomly starts doin some random legato crap which isnt even in key.
ha your right twoos that is rather outta key :S
Ha ha, Satch playing out of key... Good one! :D

Maybe someone isn't familiar with pitch axis? Or Satch's music in general?
