I needed a picture of a lute, so naturally, I went straight to "Igor Varfolomeev's site about lute and guitar music." Actually, Google took me there. I am aware that it is Russian and looks "old and shady" but it is a surprisingly accurate and comprehensive lute/guitar resource. The first link (Lute instruments review) demonstrates why the history of the guitar is confusing and the second link takes you to the main website which is "about lute and guitar music." It is worth a bookmark.
