Hi all!

Just wanted to share my most recent homebrew build - the good old SLO. I've built it few times before but this time I wanted to accomplish few goals:

- pack it tightly in the smallest box possible
- use point-to-point construction but without it being a total mess
- simplify channel switching to use readily available and cheap relays instead of expensive optoisolators
- skipped the EQ controls as I plan to use it either plugged into the DAW or though an EQ pedal (simple to add stock tone controls though)

After few months of planning the "3d" point-to-point layout, it took few weekends to complete the build. And I'm pretty happy with the results. The SLO tone is there and there are no bad side-effects of the simplified switching circuits. It covers all my needs, so I'll integrate it with my digital rig as a foundation of my tone that I can add effects and impulses to in the DAW.

Complete build pic

First demo - ibanez RG 2550 into the preamp with a touch of timmy (clone) overdrive at the front to shape the bass response

Second demo - DIY headless telecaster into crunch channel

PS I'm not selling anything nor taking orders for custom amps. This is just for fun and education. :)

Looks and sounds great!
I have been around the block a few times but never used a pre/power amp that were not in the same actual amp itself.
What do you do with this? Plug it into a power amp? Sorry if it is a dumb question.

not a dumb question at all :) I built a full SLO before (although with 5W output section using EL91 tubes) and it was great, but since then I switched to modular philosophy for two reasons:

1) I mostly play through laptop with VST effects and impulse responses loaded in DAW. I can get better results with this setup than recording a mic'd cab in bedroom situation at bedroom levels. So I can use preamps as foundation to the tone and just shape it in VST and put different cab impulses on top of that
2) I can mix and match different preamps with different power amps
3) it's very compact and I lack space :)
