Hi, I’m contemplating a mongrel guitar with an Ibanez neck in a more traditional Strat style body.

Obviously, necks have changed and even without AANJ it’s now normal to have the heel go to the end of the board rather than stopping at the 21st and having the final three on an overhang (although such a neck would make life easier for me).

Stock Strat type bodies also have the neck pickup in the way of the end of a 24 fret board. Older Ibanez necks would make I possible to simply lop the last few frets off and the heel would fit the pocket and all would be good. Those sort of necks are getting expensive now though (at least in the U.K.) so I’m looking at more easily (cheaply!) ebayable Wizard 3’s which seem to have an extended heel instead.

What I’m considering is literally cutting the whole end off the neck and reshaping the end so it fits the pocket to get around the issue. But, I don’t know where the bottom of the truss is anchored so don’t know if it’s going to get in the way.

So, I’m hoping someone has pictures of Wizard 3’s with the fretboard removed! 😂

I’ve spent most of the afternoon getting sidetracked trying to find information on this. The only other thing I can think of is eBaying a neck and steaming the board off first and then taking it from there... Although I guess it’s not such a hike from having the board off to investigate possibilities for trimming the heel to removing and fitting an alternative truss if if the anchor gets in the way.

For those wondering why the hell I’m doing all this, the answer is I’d like an Ibanez neck with maple board and Edge or at least a decent OFR on an Ash body with hot, vintage Strat pickups and no one seems to offer such an item without going custom, so I am... IF it proves successful, I may repeat with something nicer as I prefer the Wizard HP on my Origin RG550 to the Wizard 3.

I recently had a custom neck made here in the USA from warmoth. When I was going through all the specs I remember seeing a "wizard" option for the style of neck. Along with many others... And they offer all the bells and whistles. My custom neck cost was around $370. But that was with a precut Floyd nut shelf (adds a little cost), stainless frets and custom glow in the dark inlays. So it was a little more than an average neck. These are made to strat neck pocket specs. Not sure if this could be an option for you, but it wouldn't hurt to look into it.
