Hey Dave,

For the last couple of months I keep re-reading your article about the recording process for STSA. I am kind of going through a midlife musical crisis right now (even though I'm only thirty) trying to find my musical identity, and I started to think seriously about recording and songwriting more and more in order to improve my playing rather than just new licks and whatnot. In order to do this kind of experimentation musically, I need over the next year or two, to really create my own ad hoc recording facility. I always start out reading/watching alot of things, so I was wunderin' if you could point me in the direction of some books and video's that I may not know exists at the moment, as a starting point, or, even some ones to avoid for fear of getting on the wrong track. For the first time I've started to go into other area's of Guitar Center beyond guitars and accessories.

Also, as a side note, maybe doing an occassional video on your site explaning some of the equipment or processes you used to record STSA. I know I could get alot of use out of that kind of info. Sort of a "one off" Riff of the week for recording and equipment. I know alot of good guitar players and bands that do recording and their stuff always has an amatuer quality about it (even after $$$$$$ spent). I know your a busy man and It would be a pain in the ***, But I don't know alot of places that can give a hands on, non salesman approach to describing some of this stuff.

Just a thought! Thanks as always!

To record anything, you need to get the best source to the disc. That means the best performance and also the best capturing of that performance. You'll need a really good front end. That means high-end mic-pre's and converters. They're very important in this chain.

I would enter "engineering" or "recording" in google or amazon and see what comes up. Reading a good book can really help (there are many, none that I know specific names of).
