Really jonesing for the new S5520K which is a mahogany bodied, Australian blackwood topped - ? Veneer guitar. I prefer 80's hair metal with 70's classic rock thrown in. I have a TZ/AN combo sitting around already, but I'm not sure if they'd match the top, or what the top will do to the tone of the guitar (bright/warm/etc.,) Not opposed to looking at other p/u's , thinking of PAF PRO in the neck, with PAF Joe or Fred also, or PAF Masters, or Duncan Custom Custom, Custom 5 etc.,

Any recommendations or experience would be helpful..

Thanks,

You won't have to worry about the top coloring your tone...... the veneer is too thin to make a change that you could notice.

MANY people have complained about the TZ in mahogany. They say it's muddy and dark.

As far as helping you find a pickup..... I'm going to ask you to read the sticky then come back with a boatload of info. It really will help everyone here help you.

OK,

Guitar described above, with Lo-Pro, 24 frets maple neck and rosewood fretboard.

Music/guitarists attempted to play - Lynch (Duncan Distortion), DiMartini (JB), Jake E. Lee (JB) with everything from Scorps to ZZ Top to Deep Purple to VH thrown in.

I have a Blackstar Ht-5 and Boogie 1st Year Dual Rectifier with an Ibanez Jet Drive pedal.

As stated above not partial to either Dimarzio or Duncan, lately I'm more familiar with Dimarzio.

reason for asking, want to maximize the guitar to me and my playing.

Thanks!

Custom in the bridge and Pearly Gates neck - these will rock your world! ;)
I was going to tell the OP to talk to you...... I don't know anyone that's had more experience with both Duncan AND Dimarzio's newest pups through an HT-5.........Your the "IN" guy on this one.

@Traumabill- As far as playing through the Boogie. I can absolutely say that the Super3 is the right pickup for the type of music your playing. I use it in two of my guitars pushing it through a B52-AT100 head. Before you laugh, the AT100 was co-designed by Bruce Egnater to directly compete with the Dual-Rec. It does a stellar job. The Super3 has a nice tight bottom-end that has plenty of grunt while chugging without getting loose or "flabby". The mid-range is crisp and clear. It cuts through a mix like a hot knife through butter. The high-end is also crisp but NEVER gets raspy. You get good note separation without ever feeling like your getting a high-end "ice pick" in the ear.....LOL. The over-all tone of it is rather open and expressive for a pickup with so much output (DiMarzio's 5th hottest pup). When I first tried it, I thought it would be much more compressed..... I was wrong.

What about a neck pickup for the Super 3? Humbucker from Hell? 36th Anniversary may be close to Duncan's PG, Virtual PAF if I can find one?

Bill
The pickup your going to want in the neck is entirely dependent on your exact needs for a neck pup. What will be it's major duties? Will you be using it for rhythm, soloing, shredding?

Whatever you choose, your going to want at least 300mv of output. Anything less would be too underpowered to match well with the Super3. My rule of thumb for a neck pickup is to have a pup with no more than 75mv under the bridge pup. Of course that's not always possible, but it does help in making a decision.

the humbucker from hell, may look under-powered on paper, but it is super loud and full. One of my favorite neck pickups for bright clear shreddy/solo\fast stuff.

Fatter sound - paf pro
clean bright - hum from hell or fred
warm fat - liqufier or air norton
lower output paf - paf joe or 36 neck
