Hi guys,
I'm a new forum member, and I must say this site is a wealth of information. I'm thinking of getting an RG550 off ****. First, is there a year group to stay way from? Should I look for a MIJ or MIK? What about the trems, I understand the low pro is junk, or do I have that confused with the edge? What price is a fair price estimate for one in good shape? 8 out of 10 or better? I'm new here dont slaughter me! I don't know much about newer Ibanez. I had 2 Roadstar 2's in 1985 and should have kept them, they where pretty sweet. This is what I'm looking at now.

Thanks

First off, you can't post e-bay links here (link doesn't work anyway). You can however, post the auction number.

That being said, all 550s are MIJ. As for the trems, the crappy one you're refering to is the Lo-TRS. The Lo Pro and Edge are the best trems Ibanez have offered. A good price for a used mint 550 is below $500 . Hope this helps.

I'm an owner of a 550, 2 570's, and a 770. I bought the 770 used on evilbay for US$375 - a steal I might add. The 770 kicks ass compared to the 550/570. The tone is much sweeter with better definition in the notes - the neck feels to me much nicer to play and it is bound with sharktooth inlays.

Follow up - by the way the 550/570/770 all come with Edge or Lo Pro Edge. Both are comparable in quality and are excellent tremelo's if not the best in the industry. I'm not sure why the tone is better in my 770 but I'm guessing it is that the pickups are better being the IBZ dimarzio versions vs just the Ibanez version and also that they are direct mounted to the body as opposed to pickguard or ring mounted.
Don't get me wrong the 550 / 570 are both excellent guitars and play awesome, it comes down to personal preference.

Thanks for the info.
Here is the Evilbay item #7375323039. I like the look of the pick guard, so I would be looking for a 550 I guess. I would like to customize it to either a s/hum like a Kramer Proaxe or Peavey Vandenberg or just a single hum, like the one in the 2005 Ibanez cataloge that "Gravy" of Mushroomhead plays. That looks sweet. Can you put a pickguard on a 770?
Thanks again for your input.

That's quite a nice RG. If you want a H/S configuration, you should look for an RG565. I saw one one e-bay about last week. As for a pickguard on a 770, you should look for an RG770DX, though the pickguard is clear.

yep, no big issues about putting a pickguard on a 770, I did it with one of my 570's. The only thing is you may require longer volume pot's and 5 way switch to keep the knobs on. My 5 way switch knob will not stay on the way it is now.

That looks like a sweet axe! Should sound nice with the upgraded electronics.

I was actually going to buy that very same guitar a while back when they guy that did the original mods to it had it listed. It was in Mexico though so I wasn't sure because of postage, etc.

Be careful though, the sellers feedback looks sketchy, could be one of those "baystards"
