Hey guys. I have the opportunity to get a 20th anniversary RG550 for $400 including the case but I'm still on the fence because its black with a rosewood fretboard. It IS a great deal but I prefer maple and a wild color. However I am still also getting a reissue 770 with a maple board in Lazer Blue for cheap next month so that's also why I'm wondering if I should pass. I know it's a bargain and I'd normally jump but there's something still nagging at me. I'm gonna meet the guy either tomorrow or Monday to check it out but I wanted to see what you aficionados thought. Thanks!

Find a used maple board, golden age, if you look hard and hunt, you can find a DY or other cool color with maple for $400. Just my opinion.

That's a good point. There's a few decent pieces on eBay and I could scour Yakaz for CL posts. I kinda like the idea of the 5 piece neck but I owned a Roadflare 550 before that, aside from another Prestige RG3570z that I also used to own, was the smoothest playing Ibanez I've ever had. I currently have only an RG770 from '91 that of course has a rosewood board and that does still play very nicely aside from some fretwork that it could use. I suppose I could wait. What a pity, too, such a good price for an anniversary.

No, I'd be able to get both. I would inevitably make some changes to the 550 though. I know I would play the 770 more. I do want a friggin Jem tho so maybe I could sink some money into the 770 I already have and leave the new 770 stock cuz the 770 I have, the previous owner put a Seymour Duncan Screamin Demon in. It needs a fret leveling anyways and that's just another expense. Short term if I got both guitars it would be a while until I could do anything to them budget wise. I'm not interested in selling my current 770 so..that's a bummer

Why not buy both, evaluate them for a while, then sell the one your less impressed with. That would bring in funds to work on your existing 770.

I've pretty much always had 7xx's. You may be surprised by the 550, I play mine as much as, or more than, the 7's

If you can afford both then what's the problem? $400 for the black 20th RG? I'd be all over that like white on rice if the 550 is in good shape.

Lmao everybody. The 550 is in good shape, it's from a friend of a friend. I mean 400$ is a nuts deal for a 20th cuz the prices on eBay are seriously nuts and the least I've seen it advertised for from people selling online has been around 6-700 minimum. For that I'd buy it and resell it for 5 or 6 bills flat but I bet any money I'd get it and find a lucky DY somewhere and be assed out lol. I really like the way the 550's play, I had an '87 550 Roadflare that was just.....friggin....I'll cry lol, but I no longer have it. Just like how I no longer have the 1550m, or the 3570z. 3 of the best playing RG's I've ever had. But they're gone. BUT, I do happen to have the '91 770 in PM and it really does play as smooth as smooth can cuz I grabbed a few pointers from the IbanezRules tech page and went to town lol. At the very least I will have the reissue 770 in blue in a couple weeks and that has a maple board, original wizard spec neck, original edge, the nice IBZ/USA pickups that are a BITCH to find lol and a bright color so I'm sure I will be happy. Now you ask why do I no longer have any of those other guitars?...I sold them to get a Carvin. I've had about no less than maybe 14 different Ibanez's in my life and I finally made it down to the 3 not including a Jem itself that I was happy with and I sold them to get a damn Carvin. It wasn't just any Carvin, though. It was a Jason Becker Carvin. But, I had to send it back. The very next day. So being guitarless and desperate I managed to get my hands on a Jackson Soloist SL3 for a very good deal and 2 days later traded even for the 1991 Ibanez RG770PM that I today possess and do not intend on boneheadedly selling because I gotta tell you it really, really reeeaaally left a hole in my heart lol. But either way I STILL don't think I'm gonna get the black 550. Though part of me kinda thinks I should on principle alone because of the price. Nothing good has ever come of my impulses so I'm gonna just sit somewhere and breathe lol. Ibanez. Friggin Ibanez. They're too good to have just one but they're too hard to get a hold of at a human price sometimes lol. I don't want 12 of the same model. Just like one of each RG model. Oh, and a DY Jem777. That would be sick!
