Hey,

I will be buying a new guitar soon and have narrowed down my search to these two models. If I buy the RGT42 I will only change the pickups. However, if I buy the RG2550E I will change the pickups, paint and pickguard (my first mod).

Which do you suggest?

I had my RGT42DXFM delivered today and it's gorgeous. What I will say is though, the finish is a LOT darker than what it looks like on the Ibanez website. I'd check one out in person for definate, the pickups aren't that bad at all!

Forgot to mention, get the T42 if you like neck-thrus. I played one and the feel and playability was awesome. Unfortunately, it has an Edge Pro II. They aren't bad trems, but they certainly ain't an Edge. ;)

Well both are cool guitars.

The RG2550 is a prestige model they have higher end electronics and woods etc. plus they have different necks: wizard profile and the slightly fatter wizard II. (don't know if you already know all this...;))On the other hand the RGT has a trough neck... But if you want to mod everything i'd suggest like Kamikaze said get a used 550. It'll save you a lot of money...

Hope this helps a bit.

I almost forgot: it's very important you play both (or all three of them) before buying one.

I am not really a fan of buying used guitars. However, where can I find a used RG5xx in case I change my mind.

If I were to buy the RG2550, I plan on taking out the middle pickup and doing the proper wiring connections. Then I would buy a new pickguard and have the body painted. I doubt that would cost me a lot.

I have played both guitars and like both. Since this will be a step up from my current guitar (Jackson DXMG), the extra few dollars wouldn't matter too much.

Dude, used guitars are so much better than buying new guitars. New guitars have to be worn in, for the first few months they will feel awfully stiff, at least in my opinion. You should get your hands on a used RG550, as others have said, or maybe an RG770. The only real differences between the two are the cosmetics. Sharkfin inlays vs Dot inlays, etc.

I had an older RGT42BP, and I unloaded it to buy the RG2550E. Personally I feel like the 2550 is a far superior guitar. The bridge is a hundred times better, and the stock pickups sound great.

I haven't tried a 2550, but I've tried something similar, a 2570. The pickups sound very good, so I won't worry about pickup changes for quite a while. This is personal taste however. I like the looks of the 2550, but prefer the 2570. You gotta love that textured finish. :)

Thanks for the responses so far, they have been great.

I have decided to forget about the RGT42. However, the RGA121 has caught my eye. Let's say that the bridge type didn't matter, which would you suggest and why?

The only things that I am worried about are the cut aways on the RGA121. I don't exactly have big hands, but they aren't small either.

What do you mean the cutaways on the RGA121? They are exactly the same as the ones on an RG2550 or RGT42, the only difference thats in that area is the arched top but i cant imagine how that would affect the cutaways

Judging by all the pics that I have seen of the RGA121, the cut aways are not as deep as the ones on the other models. On the RG2550, the cut aways look like they extend right to the 24th fret, whereas they do not look that way on the RGA121.
