Did the pre ZR trem equipped S series have TRS or Edge trems? What year did they start using the ZR. Can you comment on the pros and cons of the ZR trem? Thanks

Prior to 2003, S-470's and lower models had TRS/ TRSII; S-540s and higher had Edge and Lo-Pro Edge (depending on year). There were also a few non-locking trem S's over the years. The ZR first appeared in the 2003 catalog on the S470 and S1620 -- that is, all the S-series guitars that year had the ZR.

I've yet to own a ZR, so I can't comment. But it seems that despite a lot of initial reservations, the ZR is winning over more people each year. The reports in this forum are generally favorable except a few posts about busted parts (do a search). A Guitar Player review of the S1620 when the ZR first appeared was very favorable about the trem.

The ZR trem is ball bearing trem whereas Edge/Lo Pro/Edge Pro are knife edge trems.

So what's the pros and cons of a ball bearing trem? Is the Kahler a ball bearing trem?

The ZR should keep tune better than a trem with knife edges, theres no chance for the ball bearings to go blunt and mess with the float of the ZR.

They look pretty good to me.
