I did that with my Voodoo Labs preamp. I swapped out 2 ECC83Ss for JJ 12AT7s (ECC81) and left 2 ECC83Ss, but I did it because the lead channel had way too much (unusable) gain and the clean channel was kind of junky.
The trouble is that I still haven't had much success balancing the clean side vs. the distorted side because I don't think the tubes are dedicated in my case (clean uses V1 & V4 while the distorted channels use all 4). So it might just be what you need.
I also tried it to see what would happen in my 2120 (that now resides in Texas). That was an experiment that didn't last long.
