Hey guys, can anyone tell me how to get the guitar tone on the audience is listning? Also is the wah hes using a modified horsie, if not what is it?

^ That's pretty much it.

A lot of the time, people use way too much gain when trying to get Vai's tone. His tone from the era is primarily just the sound of really cranked, modded Marshall JCM800s (and a few other amps, like Carvin X100B, etc...).

The problem is, you need a fecktonne of gain to compensate for not being able to use the sheer volume he would have used whilst in the studio.

cranked 100W tube amp such as a Carvin X100, Marshall JCM900 or similar.

Also is the wah hes using a modified horsie, if not what is it?
Didn't exist yet, most likely he was using an EMB Audio remote wah.

I'm guessing he was using a tubey pedal in front of the wah into the cranked amp.

So he's getting distortion in three locations, not necessarily a lot of gain in one place:
pedal (overdrive)
preamp (cascaded gain)
poweramp

If he was using an attenuator he wouldn't have had to play at huge volume.
