Thoughts on the vintage (80s) Artstars?

I'm looking at Ibanez semi hollow body guitars and have come across a 1981 Artstar (AS200) which I can't link to as i'm new to the forum. I think it might be a bit too much money for what it is, but I also can't figure out the difference between the old and new Artstars, as well as the difference between Artstar, Artist and Artcore no matter the age.

Anyone got thoughts on this?

Ibanez' naming methodology is incomprehensible gibberish, all you need to know is that 'Art' prefix guitars are trying to appeal to a distinctly different and more traditional market segment than all it's 'Rock' range.

The original Artist series guitars from the late 70's were a kind of 'signature' instrument for Ibanez signifying their move away from outright plagiarism of the established brands, a bit like the Yamaha SG series, it was an attempt to produce an 'original' looking instrument with a respectable reputation amongst professional musicians.

The earlier 'Art' series guitars are therefore considered to be professional quality instruments although this became diluted through the 00's as lower quality models were introduced.

These are broad brush strokes, I'm no historian, but you'll get the idea I'm sure.

Thanks - this is helpful. I'll give it a play. Is there somewhere authoritative I can find out the market value of a given vintage guitar?

Nope, it's like buying anything secondhand, it comes down to condition and personal choice, if you play it and like it then it's down to you to negotiate a deal. If you're buying privately then you have more leeway to make a silly offer. If you don't like the condition, the colour or the way it plays then walk away. Expect to replace the strings and have it set up at additional cost.

The vintage Ibanez site was a great resource and JD contributed a lot there but all things come then go. I did long hands on for some semi-hollow Ibanez with some research that you might want to reference including branding/naming.

Either way the first starting point is reference the exact model from Ibanez catalogs
Ibanez Catalogs

You could get some good info & relative value if you post more here. Since the AS200 is still in production you obviously leverage current new price vs 1981. Unlike USA brands vintage semi-hollows don't fetch big bucks vs new ones. The new AS200 are fantastic.
I worked on a 1976 version of that guitar..... very sweet super 70's nice woody tone (kept it for 2 weeks waiting on parts wink wink)

but like the guys said ... in a nut shell... it depends on how you feel about it and how much you are willing to pay
