Happy new year to you all! I haven't been around much recently, due to lots of first term at university partying, and my band being about to possibly maybe record at abbey road, so rehersal central, and other such commitments.

Basically, I'm trying to pick you (mainly UK based) guy's brains about universities. Currently, I'm studying International Disaster Engineering Management at Coventry University, which, although it sounds very cool, is a course for retards at a University with a very low self-esteem. After a term of concentrated no work and effort, I'm still getting firsts for my essays, and am comfortably top of the class. Which all sounds fine and dandy, except I'm going to lose all the motivation and intelligence I ever had by the time I graduate!

My plan is now to go and study Astrophysics (my first love!) at a much more prestigious university in the UK, trouble is, I dont know which one! I'm applying for: Nottingham, Leicester, Leeds, Bristol, Bath and Sheffield, I think, but I'm not sure about any of them except the first two, which I've visited and liked.

So basically, I'm wondering, out of you guys at university, or who have been/know people who go, where would you recommend? I'm looking for a good University (top 30) well-know for a great social life, preferably campus university, and generally somewhere I can hang out, make great music, learn lots, and imbibe fine beers and spirits in fine bars with fine people!

LOL! You wanted a descent nightlife and you picked Coventry!!! I used to live there for a while, hated it, very dull and depressing place. Mind you I don't live that far from Cov and in an even more boring place.

Anyhoo, I've been long out of Uni, so can't really say which uni for prestige but have heard that Bristol has a good social scene, lots of bars and restaurants and more importantly some great women. If you go there, try Clifton, expensive place to live but very nice.
I've heard Sheffield is okay aswell, well if you like the clubbing scene. Personally speaking, my sister used to live there and I hated going there.
A few of my mates went to Leceister De Montefort (all those years ago!) and when ever I went there, I really enjoyed myself. Leceister city centre has a good nightlife and lots and lots fo great restaurants.

If you are prepared to go North of the Border, Edinburgh University has a fantastic reputation and Edinburgh is a great city to live in.

I heard good things about Bath and Bristol, and Endinburgh. I actually applied to the last two, about 4 years ago, and picked Bristol as one of my final two choices in UCAS. I think Nottingham is good too, and so is Leeds. So these are all pretty good schools, but that doesn't necesarily mean they are good for your programme. So you should really try to think about it from that angle.

Well, Notts is really good as a uni, but pretty dangerous as a place :S Bath is loverly and pretty and nice, but quiet, but near bristol which has an increabible music scene. Bristol uni is also totally awesome in every way

I've dropped out of my first year at Plymouth doing Electronic communication systems. I've reapplied to LCM, LIPA, Bath Spa, Southampton Solent and Westminster; to do sound tech.

Hope I've made the right choice this time!

Globs!! I went to Leeds doning Engineering..... and great place... (good physics Depts to with decnt 3rd year projects.... and awesome social life.... there a re many Universities and colleges in Leeds so over 100,000 studes there at any one time... get yourself there!!

yeah, been hearing a lot of good things about leeds recently- going up there next month to have a poke around- suggest any places/nightspots i have to see?
