This is in response to comment in a thread i had about my 1570 i picked up. I mentioned swapping out pickup magnets.

I looked everywhere and couldnt find a how to so i just dove in. I am going to write up what i did to swap them out. I am far from a guitar expert, quite the opposite so this is to be used to give you an idea of what is involved in the swap.

Remove the electrical panel (for later)
Optional, you can remove your trem, i did not.

Unscrew and remove the 4 small screws on the sides of your pickups and put them in a safe place. This is the only thing holding your pickups to the guitar.

My next step was cover the body of the guitar to prtect it from scratching. Next i released all the tension on the string with the whammy bar and carefully pulled out a pickup. Dont yank on it but rather feed it out slowly so you dont pull a wire off of your pickup.

Turn the pickup over and remove the 4 small screws that are holding the pickup to the plate. With a small flatblade screwdriver carefully pry the pickup loose from the plate. I started at the end farthest from the wire.

Now its just a matter of getting the magnet out. I had to flex my pickups away from each other to break the magnet loose. You cant miss the madnet, it sits in between the pickups.
Important. Make not of the exact orientation on the magnet otherwise your pickups wont work right. Put it down so you know how to put it back in correctly.

Repeat for the second humbucker till you have both magnets out. Time to swap magnets and put the guita back together.

Important! The pickups have reversed polarity. Lay your pickups flat and oriented like you removed them from the guitar. Withou picking them up simply turn them 180 degrees longways and put the guitar back together.

Two tips. Loosen tension on your guitar strings and just place the pickups back in the body and let go of your trem bar. Now they are held back in place so you wont have to worry about scratches. Now go back to your wiring cavity and pull any excess wire left in the pickup cavity. This will allow you pickups to seat properly.

Hope this helps.

No, there are no quick disconnects so you would have to solder them in. More importantly the v7 is a neck pickup. Pickups that are designed for the neck generally have a lower output so your soumd would be much worse.

in the case of the V7-V8 pickups.......doing a mag swap DOES work very well. Many of us have done it and are amazed at the results.

see this thread:

sorry...I meant to quote this post:
isnt it just simpler to swap the pickups?
As in, put the V7 in the V8's place, and vice versa, not actually put different pickups.

Hey guys, I thought this thread could use some pics... I'm trying to decide which pickups to replace mine with, I'm having trouble choosing between the super 3, and the super distortion for metal... but thats a whole other thread. In the meantime I figured I'd try this pickup swap... It really is easy, and I'm not even a great guitar player yet, just some guy that wanted better tone from his axe.

thanks sciroccosven for this writeup, and to LonePhantom for discovering it.

Speaking of that thread, I had mentioned there how I achieved better distortion and shape my tone with gain stacking and pedals (well I really didn't get into tone shaping but did mention the EQ, which works along side the amp's and other pedals' EQ controls). It just so happens that my main metal axe right now is an rg570 with stock v7/v8 HB's, which I had swapped the mags in a while ago. It was an improvement, but another that helped was learning how to adjust the pole pieces. Give it a try after you test the mag swap. Contrary to some peoples' belief, the pole pieces are not meant to simply match the neck radius, they're meant for fine tuning the dynamics of the pickup. If "0" is the level position, where the pole piece is level with the bobbin top, and higher numbers coincide with pole height, my poles are positioned as follows from low E to high E... 6 - 7 - 5 - 3 - 0 - 1. Basically like Eric Johnson's pole pieces but higher on the bass side for more crunch. So, you can see there is a lot you can do to improve your tone, especially with decent pickups like the V series, besides simply replacing your pups. That's not to say you won't still itch to try out some new pickups, but in my case I have too much to work with and at this point, don't see (or hear) a reason to pour the money into a new set of pups. I could buy ten different ones and not one set alone will give me the versatility that the rest of my setup offers besides the fact that I can swap those mags and adjust those poles, too. In the end I might just wind up right back at the same tone I'm achieving now (which is close to Entombed - Evilyn, but I'm not in C standard right now).

Edit: pic of my poles..

I obviously missed this thread originally!

It's great to see that people have really dug this modification. It's amazing how effective it is. Really makes the pickups so much more useful.
