I don't know how many great creations I've lost due to not recording when just noodling around.
That's got to stop!

I've been out of the playing/writing mode for a few years and getting back into it.

Curious what people are using? I know many just use their phones, but I'm not wanting to do this.

I need something that I can as well use when just playing though my HELIX Floor, and using headphones only, where I could maybe use a splitter from the headphone output to a device.

I tend to only use DAW when I'm really ready..
So I record ideas straight into the default recorder on my phone for acoustic stuff as a memory aid. Or sometimes save in a spare patch in my looper (Boss RC500 has loads of slots).. then work then up into things later to record properly.

For actual recording I go pedalboard>Neunaber Iconoclast>Focusrite>Ableton on PC.

The Neunaber eases the processing load on my cheap PC and makes high gain pedals sound great with no fizz.

I either record stereo or use three stereo inputs of the Iconoclast to record two tracks:

Guitar>Iconoclast>daw
Guitar>mono pedals>Iconoclast other channel>Daw

It's good to get an effects track and a clean track you can add effects to in the DAW recorded simultaneously.

This is more strictly related to just random practice and new sound creation coming from noodling.

I can easily spend and hour or two, then find where I keep forgetting then missing those moments when I should have been recording the session to pick those pieces out.

Gotcha,
I tend to get most my ideas either playing with a loop in which case I save anything I like to one of the 99 banks on the looper. Or if acoustic just capture it on my phone.

It's fun listening back to old ideas and trying to reverse engineer them... Top tip of you like odd tunings on acoustic like I do, rename each saved thing to include the tuning you had the guitar in in the file name..

I find my loop on the HELIX and my old JamMan not having enough memory.... I think that's one of my biggest needs. I need hours and hours.

I loop a lot, the deal breakers for me were:

Three inputs (to run stereo, and an XLR for my condenser mic), at least two tracks you can play in parallel or series. Sound quality and ease of use of interface.

Any percussion, lots of memory are a bonus.

I think there are quite a few options these days.

Which one do you use?

I think it opened up a rabbit hole.

I do plan on doing similar things.

My usual signal path:

AB-Y pedal so I can route either guitar or minibrute (analogue synth) through my board.

Then gain pedals>Dark Star pad reverb>belle epoch tape delay > then after this all stereo> Boss MD 500 (modulation ) >DD6 delay> Neunaber immerse reverb > Boss RC500 looper in stereo
Then either
Neunaber Iconoclast speaker SIM > DAW
Or two amps..

The Boss looper's XLR input then always has a mic attached for acoustic/Cajon/piano/strings/vocals/whatever...

Or sometimes I run mono and run bass> Laney digbeth preamp > looper input 2
or swap the bass for the synth...

I can do anything from acoustic centred jams to big layered post rock/post punk stuff or rockier stuff..

Only real limit is the built in drums on the RC500 are a bit weak.

If you're using a Helix, you can use one of the outs (right man or an FX loop Send) to an inexpensive audio interface and into your computer - I use Audacity which is free.

More often than not I use a free iPhone app called Hokusai 2 which is much better than what the iPhone ships with. But that won't work if you're using headphones. Super fast and easy though.

Yes, I sure opened the rabbit hole...... Things now have changed my outlook to what I really need and could utilize.

What I've been finding and a lot of researching, really boils down to what you you actually need and what and how will you be using it.

I've come to the conclusion that I do need effects, 3 banks, 32 bit processing, good percussion and the ability to download.

I torn between the Boss RC-600 and the Areos. The RC-600 is huge though.....
