Ive seen some guys, while they do really fast legato runs, bring their right arm over their left and use their pick hand to, what appears to be, mute the strings near the nut (it looks like they just grab the neck really). I guess it would be to keep unwanted noise down and to look cool during legato licks. Is that all thats going on or is there more to it?

yes it just mute the other strings so it won't be noisy. The same like satriani and Vai did when they play all the legato
