just before xmas i got myself an RG20051 and i love it, especially the neck. but i cant help but think i would prefer it a little bit more if it didnt have that unsightly bump behind the nut. im being fussy i know lol and it doesnt really effect the playablity i just dont like the look of it. any one else think the same ?

Actually I have no problem with it whatsoever. The only guitar i have without the scarf joint is my RGT, and i find it relieves the smoothness of the back of the guitar nicely. And it feels strangely good. Um.

Anyway, I tend to spend more time playing the guitar than looking at the back of it so the aesthetics are not much of an isue for me.

my favourite appearance-wise is my rgt42fmdr. it has the volute and a rear mounted nut. i just like the way the holes for the nut are so damn deep. kinda silly.

in terms of feel, i love the mini-volute on my 2002 rg1620x.

The 3120s have had the volute for years, along with the older Prestiges and J-Customs, so it's not a new thing. I think the Jems and some of the RGs still have the scarf joint (could be wrong, haven't play the new 25**s)

I don't like the looks, but for anyone with stress cracks it does indeed serve a purpose (my guitars haven't suffered from those)

As for playability, I know the difference is marginal but still, it was one of my reasons to choose a Jem90HAM over several J-customs that I tried at the time.

So I do miss it, but the five-piece necks make up for it.

I prefer the volute to the scarf joint because:

1. It looks better, Especially on 3 and 5 piece necks
2. It's stronger
3. I don't notice it and i have scarf joint and volute guitars. I just prefer the volute

Absolutly NO Jems, Prestige RGs and Universes from 2005 and onwards have the scarf joint.

YES you are wrong. Jems and RGs no longer have the scarf joint.

Sorry to drag up an old thread............but.

I actually played a prestige neck with the volute on Saturday, and I did not like it at all. It is definately thicker than on my Fender acoustic. This may be because it is a thinner neck, but I didn't like fretting open e or a chords. When you also have a chunky locking nut in the same position then that is alot of extra beef up there.

However since I am fixing a neck which has seriously cracked at the locking nut, I can see the point I suppose.

I have an RG20051, it's got the new prestige wizard with the volute and I think it's cool, but I can't figure out why they have a volute on the Jem's if they are still mounting the nut from the rear? Isn't the point of a volute to mount the nut from the top?

it's also to thicken the neck at the point where it's most prone to breaking.
