Dude do a search on the forum using the search feature of jemsite... there has been so many discussions on the topic, you will get more answers searching then just being lazy and asking people to post links for you...

Plus it takes years of practise to swirl properly and you wont be getting any real help because there is a secret code to some swirlers who have their own techniques, use a certain type or brand of paint etc...

Just to show you how easy it is to find out information for yourself I typed in google "how to swirl a guitar" and here is the findings..

Talk about lazy

Here are my trials - It will give you a good place to start. I have not had time to play lately to go any further - but it should help you understand. As others have said - you really won't get answers out of the successful swirlers. I am anxious to be one of those successfull swirlers as I AM going to let the cat out of the bag...until then, all I can do is post my trials. Others have chimed in on it as well...

Is there any way to create a seperate topic on here of "Swirls" and put al lthe posts realted to it in there? Might help reduce the same questions getting the same answers...

I don't get how people can say they do a search and get nothing??? But it might recude the reduant posts on the topic?

Might be a pain to do, I figured Iw ould throw it out there. It seems to be a hot topic that comes and goes...

Well - it's what people are using...I have a theory on different ones that is totally opposite. I've already typed it too many times, and no one seems to comment on it. So either they don't care, or don't think it will work.

To sum it up - ATD also swirled fabric / shirts. Try using oil based enamels to do that and see if you could wear it or wash it. And how likely is it that he got this to work with 2 differnet types of paints, and match the colors exactly? I personally don't think he used oil based enamels...

But if your getting results you are happy with - then who cares I guess?

empire0895 - Correct, Testers are what worked best for me. I have not tried my Humbrol yet, but have tried HOK, Rustoleum, and One Shot.

dgbaker33 - My Theory are fabric paints. Screen printing paints - something along that line. I have had confirmation for 2 now that they have been using screen printing paints. And their swirls look great.

Like I said however, I guess it doesn't really matter - find what works for you, and go with it. Even if I figure out what paints ATD used, doesn't mean I'm going to be able to buy them and produce swirls like his!

empire0895 - the testors I used were the OLD school ones from way back when. Just the basic colors in the short square bottles with a basic white label on them. Since your link doesn't show the bottles, I couldn't tell you which ones. They were not the round bottles, I can tell you that.

As for fabric paint, no not from there. I got them from a local art Store...Jacquard or something like that? They might sell that at the above place, I forget. It says it's for fabric, airbrushing, marbling, and other things.

Still have not tried it yet - refinishing the basement, and that has been taking my time. Want to get ti done before the nice weather hits - if it ever does!

The only other thing I need to get is the water conditioner stuff...that thickens it up. It's just expensive, and I have not had the time yet...the Carageenan...expensive in the realm of enough to mix with 55g of water that is...Mthocel is a less expensive substitute. I don't think it lasts as long however. The Carageenan I think can be mixed, do some swirls, put a lid on your tub, and use more - not sure how long though.

Both are methods I think worth looking into. If anyone here has tried - let me know. I don't think anyone has because it sounds like a lot of extra work - and they jsut want to get dipping!

I have looked into this also. The Carageenan is the only reason i didnt give it a try. It would be an expensive experiment... When i had Herc swirl a guitar for me years ago, i tried to pick his brain. This was the only thing he would give up(and alum?) I believe that his and OTS stuff may be done this way. Just looks like it....More controlled than my stuff for sure. I do like the chaos i get also....
