Hello there!
So i'm looking at this used RG7420 for 350€. It's refinished, has it's tremolo replaced by a licenced floyd rose and is in good condition, made in 2000 and taken care of well. I have a few questions i want to ask. How does a 16 year old japanese made Ibanez compare to used newer models? The price difference shocks me and i really do want a quality guitar. Is it a better choice to buy an older guitar cheaper? How much effort would it be to put blackouts in that guitar? Would it require rerouting? I want a guitar with actives, as i already have a jem505 with passives and i don't want a guitar that's almost the same. Is the price tag good for that guitar?

i have a 7420...i have about 400 us dollars in mine because i put a real floyd rose on it...quality? i can't complain...sounds great, stays in tune, low action...can't help on the blackouts as i don't know their "footprint"...as for the price? that really depends on the market...mine was pretty beat up so i only gave 200 for it, but there may be more in america than in europe...d.m.

Well, since the RG7420 is no longer made in Japan, there really is no comparison. I for one, would take a 16 year old MIJ RG7420 over a brand new RG7420 that is made in Indonesia these days.

Go with the MIJ 7420. Unless you hate Ibanez guitars and 7 strings, I think you'll be happy.

I actually meant how do old japanese models compare to new ones averagely, since the price difference is so big when buying 2nd hand.

What's EUR pricing on a 7620? The 7420s were decent enough guitars - Japanese made, shared a neck with the 7620, though the pickups were Ibby and they had the LoTRS7 trem instead of the LoPro 7. If you can get a 7620 without the refinish and modifications for EUR100-150 more, I'd hold out.

I forget if Blackouts come in a passive-sized housing, but if so they'll require little to no routing. That said, there are a TON of different "flavors" of passive pickups, so having two guitars with passives won't have you with guitars that "sound the same."
I really don't know because there are just few 2nd hand 7 strings on sale in Slovenia and there is no 7620 on sale on ebay (in europe). I simply just want a fast nice looking 7 string and there isn't much choice here, so i'm considering everything there is, and that guitar is the only japanese made. Besides, the price seems good. I still have to try it though. I did originally want a schecter though, to have something different than my JEM.

Blackouts do come in passive-sized housing, and i'd like blackouts because i really like Jeff Loomis and similar artists and i've always wanted a guitar with actives. If i had to chose i'd have passives but i want some diversity.

Another thing about that guitar is that i have no idea what floyd rose it is instead that it writes Licenced under Floyd Rose on it.

I'm apologizing for posting this in the Other Ibanez guitars category instead of Prestige category, i didn't see it, my apologies.

Thanks for all the answers.
