Single vs Humbucker - ...why many differences?

Grab your beloved babe and carefully watch at the pick-ups zone.
Theorically, a single should look like half an humbucker, don't it?

Well, so:

- why do a single has NOT adjustable poles?

- why do a single has a full plastic cover instead of a top one w/ tape around the winding?

- why do a single has a plastic triangular baseplate (sometimes w/ visible wirings) instead of a rectangular metallic one?

- why do a single has NOT ring?

Too many question? Sorry, just curiosity!

Thanx

You're right dude.

I saw some new 7 string RG & S series they feature a single w/ adj. poles, but nothin more!

I mean, thay're only one thousandth of all the guitar models in the whole world!

I was obviously talking about the standard single pick-up.

Dudes, does anyone knows more?

Disappointment!

I mean, all of you are talkin guitar nite & day, and when one do asks you something easy, you stop talking!

Disappointment!

I think that guys like you who have 20 Jems & 20 Universes MUST to know almost one of these four questions!

C'mon men!

The answer is simple:

Strat-style single-coil pickups were originally designed by Fender.

Humbucking pickups were originally designed by Gibson.

Aftermarket replacement pickups generally follow the same design principles and specs, in order for the replacements to be compatible, both physically and sonically with the accepted standards out there.

If you don't like it, you can always put lipstick-tube pickups in your Universe.

Well...
Recently one family member asked me about p-ups, wirings and little holes on humbs plastic covers. When I asked people who are considered to be *the dudes* in those things everybody were confused, little bit ashamed and came out with stupidest phrases like "pickup chiller"...
So there was this guy who spent his whole life with guitar in his lap and he came out with something which sounded like reasonable answer. But he also mentioned that fastest way of learning about those things is asking guys who actually work in those companies. "Whatever says one guitar dude, another will try to tell you more and as much as possible different...", he said, "that's what guitar playing is all about."
So Nuno, I think that, if you are in some hard-core learning, maybe this is wrong adress. Search the net and try to find as much as possible g-tech sites, books, try comunicating with guys who make money knowing this things. Those guys will be more than happy to help you in your search for knowledge. I know one g-tech (he's Italian dude, like you :) ) and everything I asked him about my 7-babe, he was more than happy to help me.
Thanx for reading my humble opinion...

Single vs Humbucker

Difference between single coil and humbucker?

A single coil does indeed look like half an humbucker, but you must approach the situation the other way: humbucking pups are two single coils linked together. (series or parallel).

A single coil pup (single bobbin of wire around a magnet) will act perfectly as a pu, but it can also act as an antenna and pick up nearby "unwanted" electrical waves. This causes the so called "hum".

Like darren wilson said, the humbucker was designed by Gibson. They designed this humbucking pu which cancelled out hum.
By linking two single coils together, you combine two waves of interference an puts them together out-of-phase.

I'm not gonna go too theoretically, but in a nutshell the humbucking pu acts the following:
any signal (i.e. hum) 'seen' by the coils is cancelled, and any signal (i.e. string vibrations) 'seen' by the magnetic poles is accepted.

This is the basic theory behind a humbucking pu compressed into one sentence.
If you want to know more, I agree on Al_KatZ to find out good books about guitar electronics, or search the net,...

Cheers,
Joten

Thanx Joten, but I know how does a pu works.

Mine was just an aesthetical question. I just wanted to know why a single pu doesn't look half a humbucker, or viceversa.

Anyway, thanx.

You can find it on the new Ibanez 2001 catalog.
Open it to the KoRn's page, and watch at the guitars on the right page.
The 1st RG on the left, has a single that looks quite half an humbucker (adj. poles, straight route, straight metallic baseplate).
I also saw Munky w/ a S-Series (7 string) equipped w/ two single like that.
