According to the blurb on the Dimarzio site, these two are both identical, except that the Dual Sound has the ability to be coil tapped.

now does this mean that the super distortion wont split it coils when the selector switch is in position 4, or does it just mean that the SD wont support the push/pull pot coil tapping?

When the Super Distortion first came out, you couldn't split it. The Dual Sound is a Super Distortion you where able to split and was released a few years later. The Super Distortion then changed over so you could split it. So, now it's just redundant to have both of them. Sales must be good for both, otherwise Dimarzio would have phased one out. They're probably hitting 2 different markets with them, the heavier crowd and the strat crowd.

When you get a DP101 Dual Sound, you're also receiving in the container a switch which can be immediately used to facilitate the extra modes of wiring - used to be a mini double pole switch, and nowadays you'll find a compact format push pull pot, 500k with a DPDT switch.

That, the name and model numbers are, as already pointed out, the only differences; the pickup itself is identical.
