What you must have done is entered the wrong email address.

My advice would be to ebay the VWH here in the UK and just buy a brand new JS1200CA from Rich.

it seems like it doesnt like my personal email address. i've tried it from my laptop and my desktop and I get no emails. tried a dozen times over the past week. and my email address is working, i checked.

put my company email address in and it worked just fine. very wierd.

you are correct though, the cost of shipping him my guitar would negate the savings I'd make by buying from him.

i dunno. maybe i'll hold off selling mine till I see what the 50th anni JEM is going to turn out like. if its awesome then i'll sell mine on ebay and send rich an order. if its not then i'll sell mine and get a 1200CA with the money.

 

I don't think we will see the 50,000 Jem special for a bit yet.
It took them 16 years to sell 45,000 and don't forget, Steve was considdered god between 1987-1993 so I would say that at least 2 years before there is a 50,000 edition.

Hi zerolight. Good to see another Scot on here! I've never had the pleasure of playing a JS so it's difficult to know the answer. What I did do last year was finally trade my '89 Jem 777VBK in for a new UV777PBK and I can highly recommend one. I had much the same problem really. The black and green of the Jem seemed so cool in'93 when I bought it, but 10 years later just seemed too in-your-face! The Uni is a different beast altogether. So much class yet on the subtle side of flashy so I'm always proud, rather than embarassed, to be seen playing it :wink: Everyone that sees it has only one thing to say- "Beautiful".

In addition, the tone, especially the clean tones, is far in advance of the '89 Jem. I was always secretly disappointed in the VBK. It was just a bit to thin, lacking low end response and really didn't like to play with any conviction on the bridge p/u. The neck had a lovely fluid sound, but the two seemed so mismatched. The Uni, on the otherhand, has SO much more depth, sustain, resonance, it's just so much better I couldn't believe it. I know the Evos in the VWH are a lot ballsier than the old PAF Pros, and I actually want to buy a VWH as a second guitar, but do try and find a Uni to try. Ignore the whole 7 string thing. You don't have to use it, and you adapt very quickly to it as well. If anything, I use it far more playing clean, especially through my GT6 with the effects doing lots of delay/chorus/spacey sounds. It also means I don't have to buy a bass and save some money :lol: Just doing a pitch shift on the GT6 and using the lower string gives a lovely approximation 8)

Of course, I also fancy adding a JS to my collection, but the wife might disown me :wink: Not to mention an EB/MM Luke, but we can always dream. Though the Uni is so versatile, I really don't need another guitar.

Try one, I hope you'll be impressed!

BTW, which store do you use? I've been using Sound Control in Edinburgh, though the new one in Corstorphine ("Guitarguitar") has me intrigued as it means no more manic lunchtime trips into town. Just park at PC World.

SoundControl in Glasgow mostly, and McCormicks. Neither have a UV. McCormicks have a Burnt Blue JS though. Having said that, I bought my JEM from ibanezrules and my PRS from wildwoodguitars. if I had the money I'd take that lovely JS Crystal Planet. mmm. However I am very tempted to sell the VWH and order a 1200CA from Rich.

 

like most jem players you pay too much attention to looks
(now you ALL will hate me - i'm just kiddin' though)

don't buy a JS before you've played it. most ppl love it but some - especially those accustomed to thin necks like the one on the JEM - don't.

it's basically a stratocaster neck with the cool compound radius thing (check this board to see what it is... i'm typing enough anyways).

spend an hour or two playing this JS1000BTB your local store has - but be sure it's a JS1000, no JS100 which is the 555 of JS's (ok, mb not THAT bad).

if you like responsiveness in a guitar, the fred (dimarzio fred, bridge PU in JS guitars) will be the right thing for you. the neck pickup on this JS1000 will be a bit different to the one in the JS1200CA, though as joe got his new "paf joe" instead of the paf pro. i don't know how much difference there is, actually. try to get ahold of some reviews or tests. maybe rich could let us know his opinion, too. certainly you play a 1200?

last but not least i gotta warn you, though: having played the JS every other guitar neck will feel kind of "wrong" to you

I'm afraid Edinburgh is no better. I had to order my UV directly through SC, though they at least gave a good trade in for the JEM. If you're in either store soon, can you let me know if they have an Ernie Ball Musicman Luke in stock? Really want to try one.

If you can't find a JS, try Scayles in Edinburgh. Haven't been in for a while but they had loads in September/October. THey're just up from the Odeon cinema on South Clerk street, though the address is actually St Patricks Square.

Im no fan of the 7VWH looks, but is is an amazing instrument, far more expensive than the JS1200.

A los of people would gladly swap a UV777BK for a 7VWH, not to mention a JS.

Why dont you sell your 7VWH and then buy another guitar from Rich?

No chance!!! I much prefer the Uni tone to either, though would gladly own either in ADDITION to the Uni. Suspect my next guitar will be an EB/MM Luke II though 8)

i have played both now and i like the sound that comes out of the JEM better for what i play. the neck on the JEM also fits my hand great and i play better because of it. the JS has a weird warm tone no matter what pick you have switched on. the JS seems to have no BALLS either when it comes to the low grunt.
the JEM thou seems to have its own problems with cracks and what not. but the sound from it is amazing :lol:

Thats my plan. Sorry, when I said trade, I meant sell it for a JS1200CA. My JEM is on eBay right now. Having bought from Rich instead of the UK, I can sell it in the UK for the going rate for a used JEM7VWH and still only loose a couple of hundred UK pounds on what I paid for it from Rich. Infact, I can sell it, and buy the 1200CA from Rich, and still have a 130 UK pounds change, even after paying taxes and shipping to the UK. Thanks to the whopping 1.8 USD to the GBP at the moment. OK, so it means I lose a couple of hundred quid on the JEM, more than that on the JS compared to the UK price, so I still win.

 

in order not to do the jems injustice i went and played one today. through several amps. you're right... the neck isn't as thin as i remembered (are there any other ibanez guitars with the monkey grip i might have confused with the jem?)

great guitar. if it wasn't that kinda similiar to a js i'd consider one... but they're too expensive for me

only played a 555, though... store didn't have anything else.

soz, rich... i think i confused the jem with some guitar i played 2 years ago. it was a green burnt one with natural wood feel on the body. bsb? can't remember....

I have both a Jem and a JS and I play the Jem a lot more than the JS. Both are great guitars but I just find the Jem the most comfortable guitar I have ever played in my life, and I've played a few! lol...having said that, I use the JS if I'm playing rhythm.

 

To this day, i still haven't tried out a JEM. Although i've played an RG guitar with the middle pickup, and my pick would always hit that middle pickup which annoyed the heck out of me..........maybe thats why i play Js's :wink: Still would like to have a JEM10th someday.

 

I will say this----I have never felt more unlimited playing any guitar than a JEM. Incredible speed and ease of playing and great tone. However most of them are a bit too outrageous looking for me. There are certain JEMs I REALLY like though, such as the 10th Anniv., the VWH and some of the swirls. I can't, however, see myself playing a bright pink or bright green guitar!!!

The JS guitars have a much more substantial feel and really let you dig in for the notes. That is a great thing also, but if I could only have one it would be the JEM.

I would say the JEM is like a Ferrari while the JS is more like an Aston Martin. Both can do great things, they just do them differently.

 

Hey guys. I bought my 7VWH new from Rich in October last year... shipped all the way to Glasgow, Scotland. Now while I think its an excellent guitar, the more I play it, the more I'm bothered by its Elvis like looks. I know thats a bit silly, but there you go.

So I've been thinking, maybe I should chat to Rich about trading it on a JS1200CA or a new UV? Now I'm not sure that a UV is a sensible guitar choice, as I probably dont need 7 strings, heck I struggle with 6. But the 1200CA is a nice looking guitar. Course, the JEM is worth a lot more in monetary terms isn't it?

Any advice?

Hang on a sec there, being a beginner to Jems and JSs, I would like to know what really are the differences between a Jem and a JS neck? From what I can tell, the JS neck is thinner, as in it's flatter than the Jem, am I right?
