I was informed that Ibanez redesigned the trem so that they didnt have to pay floyd fees.

I can't see why, as I can't see that Ibanez don't have the money, unless the reason they don't is that no one wants to buy a cataloge of bland guitars. They're not what they used to be.

And on another note, the Ibanez trems are still of the floyd design or type (as was the Edges), double locking floating trem. So where's the difference?

 

The pattent on the OFR ran out in 03'. Ibanez like several other manufacturers redesigned, the only problem is their redesign was based on the Lo Profile OFR [both the EP and EP2], which is still patented until [I'm not sure]. FR sued, Ibanez and several others lost [I heard Ibanez had to pay 1/4mil in fines to the patent owners]. The "Licensed by Floyd Rose" was omited from the mold, but soon after they began installing paper sticker on the trem blocks to comply with the labeling. The next year they released the Edge3, no royalties.

So the reason the Edge3 doesn't have to pay royalties is because its not based on the lo profile?

250 large is a lot. It's not that big a company.

They're only deficiencies when you consider the refinements of the EP. The EP is even LOWER a profile, smoother contoured, and the lock blocks are now integrated into the saddle and don't fall out when you turn it upside down. [who cares if you can leave the ball end on or not]. The saddle inserts are supposedly advantageous to tone and attack [in some way, suposedly] even though they probably decrease overall string life.

 

come on. the profile was not a deficiency. most of us like the original Edge. Not to nitpick but the thing is you originally said this:

which is nonsense. trem design is 99,999 out of 100,000 on the THINGS TODO LIST - never mind they removed the locking studs ...glen

 

12 years with most designs today IS long overdue.

If you recall the word was the molds were also about to the end of their useful life.

The Edge last for SIX years before it was redesigned [after the LPOFR]. But twice as long wasn't LONG overdue?! :roll:

JD said that about the molds long after he was gone, believe him or not, what do I care. If you don't think the LP was an improvement over the original then obviously you don't fall into the group of MASSES that like the LP much better than the Edge. I also prefer the Edge, but it's quirky and far out of date, and at least I can see the refinements in the LP for what they are, and ditto for the EP.

Doesn't change what it is. Swap saddles with another. Sometimes just changing the angle of the tail [with the fine tuner] will cure it. It's a common glitch.

The 1/4Mil hit was for not paying the royalties on the redesign [also part if not the BIGGEST of the reasons for the redesign, to avoid royalties] and not labeling them as Licensed.

In my OPINION it was long overdue.

I'll be honest, if they could still make Lo-Pros without paying royalties then they're stupid not to, regardless of if it was due for a redesign or not. I could count ****loads of players that would prefer Lo-Pro to Edge-Pro. And wouldn't it bring the price of the guitar down slightly?

 

Just as many players [and these are the ones that have actually bought, tried, tested, used] the EP prefer it.

Please everybody, go ahead and try, I dare you!

I'm not a trem guy anymore so I'll take your word for it. I've never actually owned a guitar with one on, but I guess I'm from the "If it ain't broke..." school of thought.

Still, it'd save them cash, so I don't see what their problem is.

 

well, I love trems , but the LP is driving me mad....

the current solution is to rap it with my knuckles and hope it stops rattling / vibrating (a vibration is a rattle with less displacement )

that's typical Japanese way, copy and beeind sued and not paying royalties to the original company....

They do the same thing in my domain(printing) they copy and resale the japanese copy for 1/4 of the price of the original machine. get sued, they pay the fines, that's goes on and on...

 

I have owned an ep equiped guitar and I didn't like it. Not the saddle design, the overall feel, or the look of it. I won't own another one.

In my opinion Ibanez is paying for the tremolo change in more than just the fine and royalties. They're paying for it in lost sales. While not many will speak up, there are plenty of people that won't even consider an ep equiped guitar. The fact that their top two guys don't use them isn't helping their cause either. --Jason
